ICC blocks a fan for targeting Smriti Mandhana’s tweet and making s*xist remarks on women’s cricket

The International Cricket Council (ICC) mainly looks after the game of cricket – it’s running and other administrative aspects. But sometimes, the world body also has to take care of gender sensitivity and shut all those who refuse to treat the sport as a gender-neutral one. Recently, one such incident happened and the ICC made the headlines. The ICC had on Thursday posted a picture of ace Indian batswoman Smriti Mandhana on its Twitter handle accompanied by a statement from her saying that she sees her only as a cricketer and not a woman cricketer. She asked what was the need to use labels when none is required. The ICC praised the 22-year-old cricketer who is currently leading the Trailblazers in Women’s T20 Challenge in Jaipur. She hit a 67-ball 90 against the Supernovas to help her team win by 2 runs and bagged the player of the match award. He even called Indians “piss drinkers” and described the women cricketers as “ugly” and that their cricket is not fun to watch. It's 2019. The tweet was also accompanied by a picture of a number of women sportspersons having a ball. The fan was blocked by the ICC for his s*xist remarks. Pakistan are the seventh-ranked team in both the ODI and T20I formats as per the ICC’s latest rankings. India, currently the runners-up in World Cup, are ranked third in women’s ODIs and fifth in the T20Is. S*xist perceptions towards women’s cricket are nothing new. In terms of the ad campaign, popularity and pay structure, there is a sea gap between men’s and women’s cricket. However, it was welcoming to see the international cricket-governing body taking a no-compromise step on denigrating women’s cricket in the latest incident and blocking the fan who spoke in a bad taste about women’s cricket.
