The outbreak of the Coronavirus has led to the cancellation of many sporting events across the globe. But with the growing number of cases, it is uncertain when this international debacle will end. With no idea of how long will the world suffer due to this virus, several events that were scheduled to be hosted later year have been cancelled or postponed.

Among all this, the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 has already been suspended till April 15. The tournament could be cancelled altogether if the situation doesn’t get better in India. But now a fresh report from the International Cricket Council (ICC) reveals that the Test Championship final which was due to be hosted next year could also be rescheduled or cancelled.

Final is scheduled to be played in June 2021 at Lord’s

The ICC Test Championship started after the conclusion of World Cup last year. The newly formed tournament was supposed to run until 2021 when the final would be played at Lord’s in the month of June. But due to the outbreak of the coronavirus many series which were under the Championship have now been postponed. This, in turn, puts pressure on the ICC as to how they will schedule these matches before June next year.

“At present, the ICC is considering the options available to us regarding the World Test Championship and no decisions have been taken,” an ICC spokesperson said according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

There are also speculations that the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020 could be postponed or cancelled. The tournament is scheduled to start on October 18. Though October is far away, there is uncertainty over how long will it take the entire world to recover from this fiasco.

The ICC is supposed to conduct a conference call with boards of all 12-Test playing nations in order to decide the future of international cricket. The decision on organising the men’s T20 World Cup later this year would be taken in the conference. It is expected that the discussion regarding the Test Championship would also occur during this time.

Currently, India is leading the Test Championship points table with 360 points. Australia is just behind India with 296 points while New Zealand is at the third position, far behind with 180 points.
