As part of its commitment to bring international cricket back to the country, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is now considering staging a T20 series involving a World XI team in Pakistan. The council is currently exploring the prospective series from a “security and budget” point of view.

Following the attack on the touring Sri Lankan cricket team in 2009, no international cricketing nation apart from Zimbabwe has visited Pakistan for a bilateral series. An ICC statement said, “The feasibility of further matches in Pakistan involving a World XI is now being considered from a security and budget perspective.”

“The ICC Board has considered an update following the ICC delegation to the PSL final in Lahore as part of its commitment to support the return of international bilateral cricket to Pakistan as long as it is safe for players, officials, media and fans,” an ICC official added.

The Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore witnessed a dramatic PSL final, which was played amidst tight security. The ICC intends to set Lahore as the sole venue for the four-match series in their efforts to reintroduce international cricket in the country.

Zimbabwe last visited Pakistan in May 2015 to play 2 T20Is followed by 3 ODIs. Pakistan swept both the series clean as they won 2-0 in both the formats. The 3rd and final ODI was abandoned due to a floodlight failure followed by a dust storm and rain.

Nevertheless, it was a landmark series. After a gap of 6 years, they were able to rise above adversity and host a home series amid beefed-up security.

The nation’s cricket team is currently touring the West Indies where two senior statesmen have already achieved personal milestones. Younis Khan became the first Pakistani member to enter the 10k club, while skipper Misbah-ul-Haq got to 5000 runs in Test cricket.

Both Younis and Misbah are all set to hang up their boots from Test cricket after the end of the ongoing series. Pakistan leads the 3-match Test series 1-0 after an emphatic victory at Sabina Park.
