At present, the relation between Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and International Cricket Council (ICC) is under a distress. As an attempt to increase cordiality between the two organizations, the Committee of Administrators (CoA) has invited ICC President Shashank Manohar to attend the final match of the tenth edition of Indian Premier League (IPL).
BCCI had received a major setback in the last ICC Board Meeting, where they lost the vote over the finance model by a margin of 9-1. BCCI felt that the decision by the ICC was completely unjust, as that lead them to a huge financial loss, which reduced their revenue by around 50%.
ICC has made an offer of additional $100 million to BCCI. Though an additional $100 million will not mean much for BCCI considering the losses they have incurred due to the new financial model, it may start a new negotiation between BCCI and Manohar. Though some members of the BCCI are of the view that Manohar’s new finance model will spread the beautiful game of cricket around the world in equal measures, the majority are cursing him for his decision.
Speaking to Times of India, a BCCI official told “The invitation has gone to Manohar on Tuesday. This is a good opportunity for the board officials to sit across the table and sort out all the differences with ICC in terms of finance and governance models.” BCCI official feels that before taking a decision on ICC’s new offer of $100 million, they must have a conversation with Manohar, and hence that is what the invitation is all about.
While adding $100million to the previously promised amount would take their revenue to $393 million, they would still face a huge loss of $180 million, as the previous financial model made them earn $573 million. As a protest, BCCI at first decided not to play ICC Champions Trophy 2017. But later, that dispute was sorted out and squad for India was released. It is now to be seen whether the on-going disputes will be sorted out on 21st May at Hyderabad, where the IPL’s 10th edition’s final match would be staged.
