The West Indies broke Bangladesh hearts as they progressed to the final courtesy of a 3 wicket win over the hosts. They will take on India in the final of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2016. Elsewhere, Namibia picked up an impressive 15 run win over Nepal. Canada too picked up an 8 wicket win in the battle of associate nations.

West Indies break Bangladesh hearts

The West Indies qualified for their first ICC final in 32 years following a 3 wicket win over hosts Bangladesh. Mehedi Hasan Miraz played a captain’s innings as he smashed a brilliant 60. Joyraz Sheik too chipped in with a useful 35 before he was castled by Shamar Springer. Mohammed Saifuddin’s gem of an innings ensured that Bangladesh finished off on 226. Gidron Pope signaled his intention early on in the innings as he smashed the Bangladesh bowling to all parts before attempting one shot too many. Skipper Shimron Hetmyer continued his amazing form with a well constructed 60. However, Hetmyer’s heroics was overshadowed by Shamar Springer’s match-winning knock of 62. Springer slammed a boundary to secure the win for the West Indies.

Brief Scores:

Bangladesh – 226 all out in 50 overs (Hasan Miraz 60; Paul 3/20)

West Indies – 230/7 in 48.4 overs (Springer 62*; Sahwon 3/37)

Canada thump Fiji

Canada scythed through Fiji in the battle for 15th place. Canada won the toss and opted to field first. The decision proved to be a masterstroke as Canadian bowlers ripped through the Fiji batting. Miraj Patel was severe as he picked up 4 wickets. Mawaiwai top-scored for the Fijians before they were blasted out for a paltry 83. Akash Gill top-scored for the Canadians with an unbeaten 38 to secure the 8 wicket win. The Fijians total has crossed 100 only once the entire tournament.

Brief Scores:

Fiji – 83 all out in 28 overs (Maraiwai 14; Patel 4/16)

Canada – 84/2 in 20 overs (Gill 38*; Weleilakeba 1/5)

Namibia edge past Nepal

Namibia secured 7th place on the table with a narrow 15-run win over Nepal. Batting first, the Namibians scored a healthy 225/9 off their 50 overs. Lohan Louwrens and Michael van Lingen scored 59 and 58 respectively en route to their competitive total. As he has done so often in the tournament, Sandeep Lamichhane was Nepal’s best bowler finishing up with figures of 3/35. Sunil Dhamala got Nepal off to a decent start as he smashed a useful 59. Yogendra Karki, Aarif Sheik, and a few others got off to decent starts but unable to capitalize. The Nepalis were eventually cleaned up for 210, fifteen runs short of their target.

Brief Scores:

Namibia – 225/9 in 50 overs (Louwrens 59; Lamichhane 3/35)

Nepal – 210 all out in 44.2 overs (Dhamala 59; van Lingen 4/24)
