High flying Australia will be looking to continue their dominant run in the World Cup when they take on struggling Sri Lanka in the twentieth match of the competition a the Kennington Oval, London. Australia are brimming with confidence after winning three of their first four games. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have won one, lost one and the other ended in a washout. Australia will be the firm favourites to win the upcoming clash.
In their last outing, the defending champions overcame a stiff challenge from Pakistan to win by 41 runs. Australia threw away a great start to suffer an inexplicable collapse and were all out for 307 despite being 223 for 2 at one stage. Openers David Warner and Aaron Finch scored a century and a fifty respectively but Australia’s middle-order failed to capitalise on the solid start. The score, however, turned out to be more than enough in the end as Pakistan were all out for 266.
Sri Lanka, on the other hand, beat Afghanistan in their last outing. The batsmen had failed once again as they were all out for just 201 against the newcomers. But unlike the batsmen, the bowlers delivered for Sri Lanka and bowled out Afghanistan for 152 while defending a revised total of 186. Sri Lanka’s next game against Pakistan was then abandoned due to rain. The Islanders will have to improve by leaps and bounds if they want to beat Australia.
What has not helped the Islanders is some off-field distraction. Earlier this week, their team manager wrote to the ICC, complaining about the green pitches dished out to them in the competition. He also complained about the training facilities. Well, with not much going their way at the moment, a win over Australia will be the perfect catalyst for Sri Lanka to bring their campaign back on track.
