Sri Lanka would require a lot of effort to beat England to keep themselves up and running in the contention of a semi-final spot. The Lankans are currently placed at No.6 in the points table as two of their matches got washed out and a win against Afghanistan in the five games they played. Defeating England will not only improve their position in the standings but also give a ray of hope for other struggling sides. A batting collapse in the previous game against Australia saw the Lankans miss out on a record chase.

All the major stats and numbers ahead of Sri Lanka’s must-win clash against England:

1Sri Lanka has defeated England only once in the ten ODI meetings since the 2015 World Cup. England won the six of the remaining nine with two games ending without a result and another in a Tie. Sri Lanka won the recent most meeting by 219 runs; the biggest defeat for England in ODI cricket.

3 – Sri Lanka won their previous three World Cup matches against England – in 2007, 2011 and 2015. Last time England defeated Sri Lanka in a CWC game was in the 1999 tournament opener at the Lord’s.
