Australia have confirmed their semi-finals spot with a clinical win over their arch-rivals England at Lord’s. The hosts of the ongoing World Cup, on the other hand, are left with no option but to win both their remaining matches now which are against India and New Zealand. Eoin Morgan and his men never arrived at the Home of Cricket for the marquee clash and were literally rolled over by Australia led by a sensational century from Aaron Finch and then some exceptional fast bowling by Mitchell Starc and Jason Behrendorff.

Chasing 286, England got off to a horrible start with James Vince being cleaned up with a brilliant Behrendorff inswinger. Starc then pinned Joe Root in front of the stumps with not many on the board and the same bowler bounced out the England skipper Morgan with the score reading only 26. Soon Jonny Bairstow was also sent back as England went further down to 53/4.

There was no looking back here for Australia even as Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler stitched a partnership. The duo fought hard to add 71 runs for the fourth wicket and just when they were opening up, Usman Khawaja took a brilliant catch to send back Buttler. Stokes, however, defied the odds and continued to play his shots. He scored a valiant 89 before being castled by a special yorker from Starc which is also being touted as the ball of the tournament.

Stokes’ wicket was the final nail in the coffin for England as they never looked like getting to the total then. Adil Rashid played his shots to entertain the crowd but that wasn’t enough to take his team over the line. Jason Behrendorff ended up picking his maiden five-wicket haul and returned with the figures of 5/43. England were bundled out for 221 runs in the 45th over to fall short of the target by 64 runs.

Finch slams century but Aussies lose momentum

Earlier in the day, Eoin Morgan opted to bowl first after winning the toss with an aim to churn out some quick wickets with the new ball. But England’s new-ball bowlers Chris Woakes and Jofra Archer bowled too short and couldn’t provide the breakthrough. David Warner and Aaron Finch were cautious early on and then post the first powerplay, they started playing their shots.

The latter especially middled the ball well as the duo added 123 runs for the opening wicket. Warner, after getting to his half-century got out to Moeen Ali. Surprisingly, Usman Khawaja was sent to bat at number three and the southpaw once again couldn’t do much. He was castled by Ben Stokes on 23 to bring Steve Smith in who was welcomed with a lot of boos.

Finch, meanwhile, was going strong and he stitched a decent stand with the former Aussie skipper. In the process, the opener also got to his century via a misfield. However, Finch got out off the very next delivery to leave his team in a little bit of trouble. Rather the wicket was a turning point in the innings as Australia never gained the momentum. When the Aussie captain got out, the score was 185/3 after 35.3 overs and they could only add 100 more runs in the next 87 deliveries.

While Steve Smith played a few good shots, the real impetus was provided by Alex Carey. The wicket-keeper-batsman remained unbeaten on 38 off 27 deliveries to propel the team’s total to 285 runs for the loss of seven wickets after 50 overs. The score which didn’t look enough at the halfway mark was too much for England in the end.
