The World Cup takes place every four years and it’s deemed to be the pinnacle of the 50-overs format of cricket. The next edition of the championship is scheduled to start on Thursday, May 30 in England and Wales. The tournament will have 10 teams and will continue for one and a half months. In the meantime, experts and pundits from around the world are trying to figure out the figures for the tournament.

Former Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting, who had been a part of three World Cup-winning squads- 1999, 2003 and 2007 respectively- also opined on the teams to watch out for. And, the experienced campaigner had no hesitation in taking England and India’s name.

Moreover, Ponting, who has been appointed as the cricket team’s new assistant coach on Friday, mentioned that the return of Steve Smith and David Warner would make even the Aussies a brute force to reckon with. The tainted cricketers’ suspension ends on the last week of March.

Ponting names his favourites

“India and England are probably the two standout teams right now, but if you add Warner and Smith back into that line-up then I think that team looks as strong as any,” Ponting was quoted as saying in cricket.com.au.

India and England and currently the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) number-two and number-one ranked teams in the ODI format and they have been in an awe-inspiring form of late. After the embarrassment of the 2015 World Cup, the Three Lions revamped their limited-overs team and are expected to pose numerous threats for the opponents.

India, on the contrary, have a number of players, including the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Kuldeep Yadav, all of whom have been stupendous in the last few months. They will play their opening match against South Africa in Southampton on June 5. The Brits, led by Eoin Morgan, will play the tournament opener against the Proteas at the Kennington Oval in London.
