Prior to the match between India and Pakistan at the Old Trafford in Manchester, there were chances of rain. The possibility of rain interrupting play was quite heavy and it only added to the players’ as well as the supporters’ worry. However, the game began uninterrupted, with clear skies and sun out much to everyone’s relief. Pakistan won the toss and decided to field first expecting the conditions to assist fast bowlers.

However, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul gave the Men in Blue a stupendous start with a 100 plus opening partnership. The Pakistan new-ball bowlers tried their hearts out but couldn’t get a breakthrough that put them under severe pressure for the rest of the innings. Even Mohammad Amir, who picked up his maiden five-wicket haul in ODIs against Australia in the previous encounter, couldn’t get the early wickets.

Eventually, it was Wahab Riaz, who gave Pakistan the first wicket, dismissing the dangerous-looking Rahul. In the meantime, the Indians had every reason to cheer. Bollywood superstar and a massive cricket fan Shah Rukh Khan rooted for the Indian team. On Sunday, India is celebrating father’s day and SRK posted a picture of two kids, sporting the Indian team’s jersey.

They had names of the iconic characters from The Lion King — King Musafa and Simba — printed on their jersey. He captioned the picture and wrote, “Ready for the match with the spirit of #FathersDay. Go India Go!!”.

Indo-Pak World Cup rivalry

Before Sunday’s match, India and Pakistan had met six times in the World Cup where the Indian team came out trumps all occasions. Though the Men in Green got the better of the rivalry in the Champions Trophy, the latter seemed to have the upper hand in the World Cup. As far as the mega event is concerned, both teams have had pretty contrasting fortunes.

India started with a resounding six-wicket victory against South Africa at the Rose Bowl in Southampton, Thereafter, Virat Kohli and Co rolled over Australia in London. Pakistan lost their first match versus the Windies at the Trent Bridge in Nottingham but came back to thump England at the same venue. After an abandoned match against Sri Lanka, Pakistan lost to Australia.
