South Africa started their World Cup campaign on a thumping note as they beat Sri Lanka by 87 runs in their first warm-up match at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. After racking up 338 in 50 overs, the Proteas bowled Dimuth Karunaratne’s Lankans out for 251 with 45 deliveries remaining in the game. Faf du Plessis and Co are next scheduled to play the Windies at the County Ground in Bristol.
The two teams will be locking horns in the ODI format after almost three years. The Windies have had a tough time lately. The Jason Holder-led unit lost thrice to Bangladesh in the tri-nation series in Ireland. Moreover, they also slumped to a seven-wicket defeat against Australia in an unofficial warm-up fixture in Southampton. They would be desperate to hit their straps ahead of the main round.
Weather Report
There is a forecast for rain in the morning. Around 2 PM, the intensity of the downpour is expected to go up and remain that way until 4 PM. The temperature will be around 17 degrees Celsius. The humidity will be in the 70s and 80s. A significant amount of cloud cover is forecasted to hover above the stadium during match-time.
Pitch Report
The track has been batting-friendly over the time being. Moreover, the numbers are in favour of the team, batting second. Hence, fielding first seems to be a wise decision. The last warm-up game between Afghanistan and Pakistan was played at this venue and 525 runs were scored in 99.4 overs.
Playing combinations
South Africa
The Proteas batting was pretty much up to the mark in the first warm-up, barring David Miller, who was the only batsman to not make a double-digit score. Their biggest positive was Hashim Amla’s knock of 65 as the veteran has had a torrid time of late. The pace bowling unit looked in a good rhythm. Dale Steyn didn’t get a chance to bowl and the speedster will be raring to hit the ground running.
Squad
Faf du Plessis (C), David Miller, Aiden Markram, Hashim Amla, Rassie van der Dussen, Jean-Paul Duminy, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius, Chris Morris, Quinton de Kock (wk), Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Imran Tahir, Dale Steyn, Tabraiz Shamsi
Windies
Chris Gayle didn’t play the unofficial warm-up and he’ll be key if the Windies is to beat South Africa. Apart from Evin Lewis and Carlos Brathwaite, the rest of the batting faltered versus the Aussies. Shai Hope may not be an out-and-out power hitter, but his form will be an important aspect going into the main round. The bowlers had an off day in Southampton and they will have to deliver.
