The cricketing fraternity has been coming forward with mixed reactions ever since the BCCI has confirmed the appointment of Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain. The sudden announcement and a lack of information over the entire process further added to the chaotic scene.

Certain talks started making rounds regarding an alleged rift between Sharma and Virat Kohli. Amidst this, former Indian captain and president of the Hyderabad Cricket Association Mohammed Azharuddin posted a Tweet that further became a matter of discussion.

“Virat Kohli has informed that he’s not available for the ODI series & Rohit Sharma is unavailable fr d upcoming test. There is no harm in taking a break but d timing has to be better. This just substantiates speculation abt d rift. Neither will be giving up d other forms of cricket,” Azharuddin’s Tweet read.

We should not jump to conclusions: Sunil Gavaskar

Virat Kohli on his part opened up about the matter in a media interaction on Wednesday, December 15. He asserted that he never asked for a break and is available for selection for the ODI series. He also opened up on the rumors of a rift between him and Sharma and reckoned that there are no problems at all between the two.

“There is no problem between me and Rohit Sharma. I’m tired of saying these things for over 2.5 years. Whatever I’ll do will never be to take the team downwards. There is no issue between Rohit and me,” Kohli said in the press conference.

India’s former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar wasn’t quite happy with Azharuddin’s statement. He said that if the former player has some inside information he should rather come out and tell everyone about it. He also added that these assumptions aren’t fair on the two players who have served Indian cricket brilliantly over the course of time.

“Unless both the players come out with something, we should not jump to conclusions. Yes, Azhar has said something; if Azhar has some inside information on what has happened, he should be the one to come out and tell us what happened. I will give the benefit of doubt to both the players because they have served Indian cricket brilliantly. I don’t think it is fair for any of us to point fingers at them,” Gavaskar said on India Today.
