Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian cricketer, reckons that MS Dhoni should be the only one to take a call on his retirement. Ever since the 2019 World Cup ended, the Jharkhand-born hasn’t played any cricket and reports of his retirement have been doing the rounds.

However, nothing concrete has come to the fore and Dhoni has preferred to stay mum as well. Dhoni was said to be in contention for the T20 World Cup in Australia, which was scheduled to start in October. But after the tournament was postponed, chances of his comeback don’t look bright.

Gambhir, who last played international cricket in 2016, said that if Dhoni feels that he could help India win matches, then he should continue playing.

No one can actually force anyone to retire: Gautam Gambhir

“Age is just a number, I think if you are in a very good form if you are hitting the ball really well,” Gambhir was quoted as saying on Star Sports show Cricket Connected.

“MS Dhoni, if he is hitting the ball really well, if he is very good form, if he is enjoying the game and if he thinks that he can still win the game for the country at that number especially at six and seven.

“If he is in great fitness and form, he should continue playing because no one can actually force anyone to retire,” Gambhir stated.

“A lot of experts can put a lot of pressure on people like MS Dhoni because of their age and stuff but again it’s an individual decision, when you started playing cricket it was your individual decision,” the 38-year-old added.

On July 7, Dhoni turned 39 years old and though he has been off the field, it hasn’t affected his fandom by any means. The veteran is expected to make a comeback in the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), representing three-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

The tournament is scheduled to get underway on September 19 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and continue until November 8. Dhoni has been a fulcrum of the CSK setup since the inaugural edition and has led them to the playoffs every other time in 10 attempts.
