India A took lead in the 5-match unofficial ODI series against England Lions with strength in the middle and lower-order batting, something that the Indian team is missing. Sam Billings, the captain of England Lions, guided his team to a solid total of 285/7 with an unbeaten 108. Billings constructed the innings perfectly taking 71 balls for his fifty and 33 balls for the next 58 runs.

On the other hand, the India A skipper Ajinkya Rahane failed to accelerate having consumed 71 deliveries for his fifty. In the next 16 deliveries, Rahane scored only nine runs and got out at the score of 165/3 leaving his team in a position where they needed 121 more runs to win from 100 deliveries.

The Indian Test team’s vice-captain scored 59 from 87 balls with four boundaries. His knock could have cost India A if not for an unbeaten 48-ball 57 by the Player of the Match, Ishan Kishan and the contributions from other batters.

Match Details:

The second game of the 5-match Unofficial ODI series between India A and England Lions will be hosted by Greenfield Stadium in Karyavattom, Trivandrum.

The match starts at 9:00 AM local (IST) time (3:30 AM GMT).

This series won’t be telecast or streamed due to conflicting with the Ranji Trophy semi-final that began on 24th January.

Pitch Condition/Report:

The first match of the series produced a far better pitch compared to the one used during the India-Windies ODI. Overall, the track for the second game will more or less be same. Thus, be prepared to witness a perfect 50-overs game with good totals on Friday.

Average 1st innings score: 195 (Two List A matches)

Record of chasing teams: Won – 2, Lost – 0 (Two List A matches)

Probable Playing XI:

India A:

Ajinkya Rahane (C), Ruturaj Gaekwad, Shreyas Iyer, Hanuma Vihari, Ishan Kishan (wk), Axar Patel, Krunal Pandya, Mayank Markande, Siddarth Kaul, Shardul Thakur, Navdeep Saini.

Bench – Anmolpreet Singh, Deepak Chahar, Ankit Bawne, Jayant Yadav.

Navdeep Saini could feature in the 2nd and 3rd ODI matches of this series. He put on an impressive show the warm-up game for the Board President’s XI against England Lions. He is expected to take the place of Shardul or Chahar in the XI. India A might rotate Anmolpreet and Gaekwad at the top.

England Lions:

Alex Davies (wk), Ben Duckett, Sam Hain, Sam Billings (C), Ollie Pope, Will Jacks, Lewis Gregory, Matthew Carter, Danny Briggs, Jamie Overton/James Porter, Zak Chappell.

Bench – Dominic Bess, Saqib Mahmood, Tom Moores.

Matthew Carter could feature ahead of Dominic Bess as the England Test player had a poor first game.

Injury and Availability Update:

James Porter bowled five overs in the previous game and all of them at the start of the innings. There are chances that he might be facing an injury or fitness issues.

Power Picks:

Ishan Kishan has excelled in his stints with the second string Indian teams. Since the start of 2018, Ishan has been a part of the Deodhar Trophy, ‘A’ team Quadrangular series and India A’s tour of England and New Zealand. Despite not opening the batting regularly, which is his strength, Kishan has produced decent numbers. He has scored 570 runs at an average of 47.5 from 15 innings with four fifties and a century. In another six innings, Ishan had scores between 21 and 49.

Captain and Vice-Captain Selection:

Shreyas Iyer and Sam Hain will be ideal as captain and vice-captain, given their batting position. The likes of Sam Billings, Hanuma Vihari and Ajinkya Rahane are expected to have decent returns from this game. Ruturaj Gaekwad is a captain material given his List A record but his chances of featuring in the match remain 50-50. Lewis Gregory and Ishan Kishan can be picked as vice-captain. Ajinkya Rahane and Lewis Gregory will be perfect alternatives for captain and vice-captain.

Expert Advice:

In the wicket-keepers category, there is a direct toss-up between Alex Davies and Ishan Kishan. While Davies opens the batting, Kishan comes in at No.6. There is a good chance that Ishan might as well open the innings but it depends on the team’s decision that will be taken after the toss or in the innings break. In the previous game, both the players scored fifties but the India A keeper earned more points.

Probable Winners:

India A will start as favourites once again given the muscle in the top-order and the experience of International players in the team.
