The three heavyweights from Asia- India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka will contest against South Africa for the Independence Cup in Sri Lanka in February 2018. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) today gleefully announced the confirmation of the series that they were able to secure with the intervention of the government of the country and got the clearance through the diplomatic channels. The series will be a celebration of Sri Lanka’s 70th year of Independence.

SLC is expecting huge financial gains from the series after Team India confirmed their participation for the tournament. As per reports in The Island, “An ODI involving the Indian team fetches around US$ 2 million in terms of television revenue and assuming that India go all the way to the final, SLC could earn a minimum of US$ 8 million from the Indian games alone. The prospect of India playing bitter political rivals Pakistan will be a double bonus.”

SLC Chief Thilanga Sumathipala told the reporters yesterday (January 20) that the Indian team has expressed its willingness to be a part of the tournament after an intervention from Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe who had a conversation about it with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi who is also a cricket enthusiast.

“India has already given their willingness to play the Independence Cup in 2018 in Sri Lanka after Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe discussed this with Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi recently,” Sumathipala said.

2017 is the 70th anniversary of Indian independence from the British rule and thus the invitation from Sri Lanka is considered to be an extended part of the same celebration. Before the Independence Cup, Team India will fly down to Sri Lanka in August this year to play 3 Test matches and limited-overs matches as well; the itinerary for the tour is yet to be officially announced.
