India won their first T20I against England in their den at Manchester on Tuesday, July 3, thrashing the hosts by 8 wickets and took a 1-0 lead in the three-game series. England put up 159 for 8 in 20 overs after Indian skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and asked the hosts to bat first. India then overhauled the score for the loss of just 2 wickets with 10 balls to spare.

However, although KL Rahul slammed an unbeaten 101 in 54 balls to power India to the win, it was chinaman Kuldeep Yadav’s 5 for 24 which had derailed the England innings first. Yadav was chosen as the man of the match.

But Rahul just took it up from where he had left in the Indian Premier League this year. He hit 10 fours and five sixes to reach his second ton in the T20 format – the first being the 55-ball 110 not out he had hit against the West Indies at Lauderhill in Florida, United States, in 2016. He also became the second Indian batsmen after Rohit Sharma to hit two T20I hundreds.

Here, we take a look at all the T20I hundreds that Indian batsmen have hit since India made their debut in this format in 2006. India has won on three occasions when one of its batsmen hit a hundred in T20Is while on two occasions, they lost

1. Suresh Raina 101 off 60 balls against South Africa at Gros Islet; 9 fours; 5 sixes; strike rate 168.33; May 2010; INDIA WON

For India, T20 was still in the early days when the dashing Suresh Raina slammed their first-ever ton in this format on a big stage. South African captain Graeme Smith won the toss in this group game in World Twenty20 which was played in the Caribbeans and asked India to make the first use of the bat.

India had an ordinary start but then Raina took over and propelled the former world champions to 186 for 5 in 20 overs, with a worthy assistance from Yuvraj Singh. The Proteas gave a good fight but fell short of India’s total by 14 runs. Raina was chosen as the man of the match.

2. Rohit Sharma 106 in 66 balls against South Africa at Dharamsala; 12 fours; 5 sixes; strike rate 160.60; Oct 2015; INDIA LOST

India’s second hundred in T20Is came more than five-and-half years since the first. South African captain Faf du Plessis won the toss and put hosts India to bat first in the first of the three-game series at Dharamsala.

Rohit Sharma soon launched his ballistic innings, slamming 106 in just 66 balls and powered the Indians to 199 for 5 in 20 overs. But the Indian bowlers could not honor Rohit’s first T20I ton as they allowed the Proteas to pile up on the runs and eventually win by 7 wickets with two balls to spare.

3. KL Rahul 110 not out in 51 balls against West Indies at Lauderhill; 12 fours; 5 sixes; strike rate 215.68; August 2016; INDIA LOST

It was the first T20I of a two-game series played in Lauderhill, Florida, United States. Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and put the Caribbeans into bat first.

The West Indians made a mincemeat of the Indian bowling to post 245 runs for 6 wickets in 20 overs. When Rohit Sharma fell in the 12th over with the team score at 137, it was an uphill task.

In came KL Rahul and with Dhoni, he added 107 runs in seven overs to take India within a striking distance of a win. But the dismissal of Dhoni in the last delivery saw India losing the game by one run and concede a lead to the Windies in the series. But Rahul’s innings remained one of the best in the history of the T20 format.

4. Rohit Sharma 118 in 43 balls against Sri Lanka at Indore; 12 fours; 10 sixes; strike rate 274.41; December 2017; INDIA WON

Captaining the side, Rohit Sharma set the Holkar Cricket Stadium on fire after Lankan captain Thisara Perera won the toss and asked India to bat first.

Accompanied by an equally fierce KL Rahul who hit 89 off 49 balls, Sharma belted the visitors at will to post 118 in just 43 balls at an incredible strike rate of 274.11 and it remains the highest score in the T20Is for India.

India amassed 260 for 5 in their 20 overs and then got Sri Lanka bowled out for 172 to win the game by 88 runs and with it, the series.

5. KL Rahul 101 not out off 54 balls against England at Manchester; 10 fours; five sixes; strike rate 187.03; July 2018; INDIA WON

Indian batters scored their fourth T20I hundreds in as many years with KL Rahul playing a match-winning innings against a formidable English side to give his side a crucial 1-0 lead in the series.

England scored 159 for 8 in 20 overs after Virat Kohli won the toss and invited Eoin Morgan’s side to bat first. India then had a poor start, losing Shikhar Dhawan with seven runs on board but then Rahul and Rohit laid the foundation for the win. The formalities were completed by Rahul and Kohli after Rohit got dismissed.

However, Rahul did not get the man of the match award this time either as it went to Kuldeep Yadav, the chinaman bowler, for his five-wicket haul.
