Chetan Sharma, the head of Team India’s selection panel, has revealed the reasons behind picking Ishan Kishan in the national squad for the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE. Kishan made his international debut earlier this year in the T20I series against England. In T20Is thus far, he scored 80 runs, including a sparkling half-century

The southpaw has also managed a fifty in the two ODIs he has played until now in his career. Kishan broke into the Indian team after he caught the eyeballs while playing for the Mumbai Indians, led by Rohit Sharma, in the Indian Premier League.

Sharma stated that Kishan is a versatile batter as he can accommodate both in the opening slot and in the middle order. The veteran also said that Kishan is a potent player of spin-bowling and can be handy in the UAE where the tracks are expected to be slow and low.

Ishan Kishan gave us a lot of options as a player: Sharma

“Ishan Kishan can bat as an opener as well as fit in as a middle-order batsman. He gave us a lot of options as a player. He’s already opened in the T20I format and even got a fifty. He’s also a good player of spin in the middle order,” Sharma was quoted as saying in Times Now.

Sharma was also of the opinion that since Kishan can handle spin-bowling efficiently, he can neutralise leg-spinners from around the world in the multi-nation tournament.

“Also, a left-hander is important. When leg-spinners from different countries come at us, someone explosive like Ishan is important. Shreyas hasn’t played much cricket of late so we have kept him in standby. That’s why Ishan made the cut,” he stated.

In 103 T20 matches since his debut in 2014, Kishan has notched 2525 runs at an average of 28.05 and a strike rate of 131.51. The left-hander has two tons and 13 fifties to his name in the format.

On Wednesday, September 8, the Board of Control for Cricket in India named the squad for the mega event in the gulf country. India’s campaign in the tournament starts on Sunday, October 24 with the match against Pakistan at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
