At end of the first day of the Test series between India and Australia, both the teams might be satisfied with the way the day played. The Indian bowlers picking 9 wickets while Australians had an unbeaten 51-run stand for the final wicket that took the score to 256/9.

Matt Renshaw’s grit despite a stomach bug that forced him to retire ill in the first session took Aussies towards a good first innings total on a dry track. Their middle and lower order couldn’t face Umesh Yadav’s fierce bowling but Mitchell Starc’s quick cameo towards the end of the day gave them what can be called a respectable total at Pune’s MCA Stadium, which is making its Test debut.

2 – Steven Smith and Shaun Marsh coming to the crease at the same time was only the 3rd known instance in Test cricket where two new batsmen came to the crease at the same time. New Zealand (Robert Kennedy and Geoff Allott) v Zimbabwe in 1996 and Pakistan (Rahat Ali and Imran Khan) v Australia in 2014 are the other two instances.

2 – Umesh Yadav is only the 2nd Indian pacer to take a 4-wicket haul in Tests coming in as the 5th bowler or later in the innings. S Nazir Ali took 4/83 vs England in 1934 at Chennai coming to bowl as 7th bowler.
