After two hard-fought sessions on day 2, India allowed Australia to come back into the game with Nathan Lyon taking a 4-wicket haul. The fifties from KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara and a 46 from skipper Ajinkya Rahane helped India to end the day at 248/6 with Ravindra Jadeja and Wriddhiman Saha at the crease with an unbeaten short stand of 27.
India are still 52 runs behind Australia’s first-innings total in this series decider. Here we look at all the stats and numbers recorded during the day’s play.
3 – Ravindra Jadeja became the 3rd player to score 500+ runs and take 50+ wickets in a single season in Test cricket. Only Kapil Dev in 1979/80 and Mitchell Johnson in 2008/09 had done this before Jadeja.
3 – KL Rahul is only the 3rd Indian to score fifty plus in all the Test matches of a series against Australia. (Min: 4 matches) Sachin Tendulkar in 2007/08 and Murali Vijay in 2014/15 series had done it before Rahul.
3 – KL Rahul is now only the 3rd Indian to score fifty plus in all the Test matches of a series at home. (Min: 4 matches) Rusi Modi vs WI in 1948/49 and CG Borde vs NZ in 1965 series had done this in the past. Borde scored it in a 5-match Test series.
4 – Number of consecutive innings in which KL Rahul has scored between 50 and 99 in Test cricket. He is only the 4th Indian to score a fifty in 4 consecutive innings without converting it into a ton in Test cricket. Rahul Dravid in 1997/98 had 6 consecutive innings while GR Viswanath in 1978/79 had 5 in a row. Navjot Singh Sidhu too had 4 scores between 50 and 99 in consecutive Test innings in 1998.
10 – Ravindra Jadeja became the 10th Indian to score 1000 runs and take 100 wickets in Test cricket. Overall, he is the 65th player to do the combo in this format.
12 – Number of fifty plus scores Cheteshwar Pujara has scored in Tests in 2016/17 season, the joint 2nd most for any player in a Test season. Ricky Ponting had 14 scores of 50+ in 2005/06 season while Mohinder Amarnath also had 12 such scores in 1982/83.
18 – Wickets picked by Nathan Lyon and Steve O’Keefe in this series so far. They are only the 3rd pair of visiting spinners to take 15+ wickets each in a Test series in India. Only England’s Allen-Lock in 1961 and Swann-Panesar in 2012 have done before.
19 – Number of sixes Ravindra Jadeja has hit in Test cricket in 2016/17 season, the most by any Indian in Tests in a season. He went past Harbhajan Singh, who hit 17 sixes during 2010/11 season.
63 – Wickets picked by Nathan Lyon in Test cricket against India, the joint most by any spinner in this format vs India. Muralitharan has taken 105 Test wickets against India while West Indies’ LR Gibbs too has 63 Test wickets vs India.
1316 – Runs scored by Cheteshwar Pujara in 2016/17 season in Test cricket, the 2nd most by anyone and the most by an Indian. He went past Gautam Gambhir’s 1269 runs in 2008/09 season.
