India v England, 2nd Test, Day 2 – Statistical Highlights

India dominated the 2nd day with the ball after been restricted for 455 by the England spinners in the 2nd Test match at Vizag. Resuming from 317/4, India lost 3 quick wickets as Virat Kohli got out adding 16 runs to his overnight score of 151. Ravi Ashwin, once again rescued India scoring a crucial 58 batting with his fellow off-spinner, Jayant Yadav who was making his debut in this Test match. Later, England lost 5 wickets by end of the day with just 103 runs on the board. Joe Root scored 53 out of those 103. Here we look at all the stats and records recorded during the day’s play.

1 – Number of Indians who have converted 3 consecutive tons into double tons in Test cricket. Rahul Dravid achieved this in 2002-2003. Virat Kohli’s previous two tons were double centuries while he fell 33 short of his 3rd in this Test.

1 – Jayant Yadav became the first Indian to be part of a review on debut (Either as batsman/bowler). He in fact, was part of England’s review while batting and during bowling which resulted him his maiden Test wicket.

2 – Number of times including in this Test, Alastair Cook got bowled by a pacer in a Test match in Asia. In the first ever Test he played in Asia, vs India at Nagpur in 2006, he got bowled by Irfan Pathan.

4 – Mohammed Shami became the 4th Indian to hit a six on the first ball he faced in a Test innings. MS Dhoni, Zaheer Khan and Sachin Tendulkar are the other 3.

8 – Number of fifty plus scores for Joe Root against India in Tests, the most he has against any opposition. Root has 7 fifty-plus scores against Australia in this format.

13 – Innings taken by Ravi Ashwin to complete 500 runs in Tests vs England. Out of the 34 Indians including Ashwin who scored 500 runs in Tests vs England, only 8 have taken fewer innings than Ashwin for the mark.

35 – Runs scored by Jayant Yadav in the first innings, the joint 4th most for an Indian while batting at No.9 or lower on Test debut. Only 2 Indians have scored a fifty on debut while batting at No.9 or lower.

47.6 – Moeen Ali’s bowling strike rate against India in Tests, the 2nd best for any spinner against India in this format. (Min: 25 wickets)

59 – Catches taken by Jonny Bairstow in Test Cricket in 2016, the 2nd most by any player in a calendar year. Mark Boucher took 65 catches in 1998.

84.46 – Virat Kohli’s average in international cricket in 2016, the 2nd best for any player in a calendar year. (Min: 1500 runs) Vivian Richards had an average of 91.71 in 1976.

167 – Virat Kohli’s 167 in his 50th Test is the 3rd highest individual score for an Indian in his 50th Test match. Sunil Gavaskar scored 221 while VVS Laxman scored 178 in their 50th Test match respectively.

509 – Runs scored by Ravi Ashwin against England in Tests, the 2nd team against whom Ashwin has aggregated 500 runs in this format. He scored 510 runs vs West Indies.

2260 – Runs scored by Joe Root in international cricket in 2016, the most by any England player in a calendar year in Tests. Previous highest was 2228 which was also by Joe Root in 2015.
