India v England 5th Test, Day 4 - Statistical Highlights

Indian middle-order batsman Karun Nair played the knock of his life as he first got to his maiden Test hundred this morning and then converted it into a double and developed further into a triple century. He got to his double ton in the post tea session and changed gears towards the end of the day, skipper Virat Kohli allowed him a few extra overs to have a go at a unique feat in Indian cricket.

He played put up a display of exciting stroke play and carted the English bowlers to all parts of the ground. Karun unleashed an array of shots and was equally potent both against the pacers and the spinners. In one knock he showed that he can bat slow and hold things tight when the situation gets tough and can cut loose and can also play T20 style cricket when the need be. With that, he became only the second Indian batsman after Virender Sehwag to score a 300. Here we look at the stats and records created during the 4th day

1 – Team India declared their first inning in the Chennai Test on 759/7. This is their highest Test total.

1 – Karun Nair’s 303* is the highest score by an Indian batsman batting at No.5 or lower. Previous best was 224 by MS Dhoni against Australia at the same ground in Chennai.

1 – With KL Rahul and Karun Nair scoring hundred plus scores in the same innings of the Chennai Test this is the first instance of two Karnataka batsmen scoring 100s in the same innings for India.

1 – Karun’s 303* is the highest individual scores in Tests this year: 302* – Azhar Ali, 258 – Ben Stokes and 254 – Joe Root follow him on the list.

2 – The M Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai has witnessed two triple centuries in Test. The most 300s at a venue is: 3 – Antigua, Leeds; 2 – Oval, Barbados, Jamaica and Chepauk.

2 – Two 300s have been scored this year. First it was Azhar Ali who scored 302 and now Nair 303*. Previously two three hundred have been scored in 1930 – Andy Sandham & Donald Bradman, 1958 – Gary Sobers & Hanif Mohammad, 2004 – Virender Sehwag & Brian Lara, 2012 – Michael Clarke & Hashim Amla, 2014 – Brendon McCullum & Kumar Sangakkara, 2016 – Azhar Ali & Karun Nair.

3 – Karun Nair became the 3rd Indian after Dilip Sardesai and Vinod Kambli to convert the maiden Test ton into a double century.

3 – Karun Nair scored the triple century just in his 3rd Test. He is the first batsman to score a triple century in the 3rd Test. Previously the earliest triple centurion was Len Hutton who got there in his 6th Test.

3 – Karun’s 303* is the second highest score as maiden Test hundred. The highest score is 365* – Gary Sobers v Pakistan, 311 – Bob Simpson v England.

5 – Ravichandran Ashwin is the 5th all-rounder in Test history to aggregate 300+ runs and claim 25+ wickets in same Test series.

6 – Karun at the age of 25 years and 13 days became the 6th youngest player to register a triple hundred in Test cricket.

160.00 – Karun Nair’s average after this Test has skyrocketed to 160.00. He came into the game with an average of 8.50.

380 – Most runs scored on the 4th day of a Test in India. Today Team India scored 368 runs and England scored 12. Previous best was 369 – India 274, Pakistan 95 in Kolkata, 2005.
