India v New Zealand 5th ODI: New Zealand Player Ratings

After a very disappointing outing in the Test series, New Zealand would have wanted to win the ODI series to salvage some pride from this disastrous Indian tour. A couple of impressive wins certainly set the tone for this final game, but things didn’t go down very well for the visitors in this alien condition of Vizag. With the series nicely poised at 2-2, both teams had everything to play for today. But, little did we know, the Kiwis were going to fall like flies in the series decider. An impressive performance was needed from Williamson and co. but none of the New Zealander’s, barring Mitch Santner, managed to impress with either the bat or the ball as the visitors folded out at a lowly score of 79 to suffer an embarrassing defeat of 190 runs. Still, as is the norm, here are the ratings for the New Zealand players: Martin Guptill: 2/10 A real live wire in the field, Martin Guptill is one of the best fielders in the world and he just showed it today by saving the plethora of runs in the outfield. But, that’s not his primary task in the team, is it? Chasing the score of 270, the Kiwis wanted a blistering start from the lanky right-hander, but, his nemesis, Umesh Yadav folded him out with yet another beauty, this time on a duck. Unfortunate? Or not good enough? You decide! Tom Latham: 3/10 A real find for the New Zealanders in this long Indian tour, there was lots of responsibilities on Tom Latham to guide the Kiwi innings but alas! The opener failed to deliver when it mattered the most! A false shot on a slowish track against Jasprit Bumrah, that should have been dealt with a straighter bat led to his eventual downfall. A disappointing end to a very impressive tour from Latham! Kane Williamson: 4/10 Again, clever and shrewd with his tactics on the field in the first innings, Williamson’s real task was to guide his team to a series victory with the bat and lead the team with style and example. Starting off brilliantly after Guptill’s early dismissal, the Kiwi Skipper paced his innings very well, until the disaster strucked, brain freeze moment arrived, the unfortunate happened and India all but claimed the ODI series as Axar Patel ended Kane’s adventure in India. A very disappointing outing from New Zealand’s best batsman, yet again. Ross Taylor: 2/10 Dropped catch, few misfields, just 19 runs scored; Ross Taylor signed off from this disastrous Indian tour with yet another nightmarish performance on the field in the both the innings. The man, who came into this series with big hype and the tag of most experienced batsman, is now in race against time to maintain his place in the side at the No.4 position after Rosco fell to Amit Mishra while attempting a cut shot at the score of 19. BJ Watling: 1/10 With Luke Ronchi disappointing in the shorter format, BJ Watling had a golden opportunity to stake his claim in the ODI side, but a couple of balls and a googly later, BJ’s stumps were shattered and the keeper batsman was already on his way back to the pavilion. Not the kind of comeback BJ and the New Zealand staff would have been hoping for. Corey Anderson: 1/10 Back into the side, this time as a pure all-rounder, Corey Anderson proved there’s still a long way to go before he gets back into his decent self, let alone the very best. An underwhelming performance with the ball from Anderson was followed by a duck in the second innings. Maybe, just maybe, Anton Devcich could have been a better option on this slowish track of Vizag rather than an undercooked Anderson? Jimmy Neesham: 3/10 A decent performance with the new ball, when there was nothing happening for the faster bowlers, must have given a lot of confidence to Jimmy Neesham going into the second innings. The powerful striker of the ball didn’t even had the time to open his arms before Amit Mishra bamboozled his stumps with a top spin. Disappointing performance from Jimmy Neesham with the bat, yet again. Not the kind of performance you want from your all rounders. Mitchell Santner: 7.5/10 Forget the results for just a moment, but, what a find Mitchell Santner has been for the Kiwis in this tour! Obviously, helped and guided by a slowish and helpful track for the spinners, Santner still had a lot of stuff to do against the likes of quality players like Dhoni and Kohli and boy, did he deliver! A brilliant performance with the ball, albeit without any real support from the other end, Mitchell Santner was probably the best player for the Kiwis today. An economy of just 3.6 along with the wicket of MS Dhoni only tells a part of the story as Santner was brilliant in the first innings. Tim Southee: 4/10 Tim Southee got the feel of the pitch quite early on in the innings. A plethora of slower balls and innovative variations dominated his bowling, but, the 27-year-old failed to claim even a single victim in his wicket column. Add to that, the tail-ender also failed to contribute anything with the bat. Still, an economical bowling performance in the death overs earns him 4 points. Also read: India v New Zealand 5th ODI: India Player Ratings Ish Sodhi: 4.5/10 With a couple of wickets to his name, including that of big fish Virat Kohli and Manish Pandey, you would think he deserves more rating points, right? Well, add to that, a dozen of short deliveries and a bunch of half volleys, Sodhi ended up gifting away 66 runs in his 10 overs on a slow, low and turning track that had a plenty of help for the spinners. Just look at Mitchell Santner and what the 3 Indian spinners did! Sodhi should have done better. Trent Boult: 5/10 With not much help for the predominantly swing bowler, Trent Boult was forced to change his tactics and bowl a lot of slowers one’s and cutters, even with the new ball. A couple of wickets to his name and a good economy earns him 5 points in this series decider.
