Mayank Agarwal scored a brilliant century as team India again dominated day one of the second Test as they did in the Kanpur Test. After winning the toss, Agarwal and Shubman Gill gave the team a good start as the duo stitched 80 runs opening stand. Shubman Gill (44) missed out on his half-century as he became Ajaz Patel’s first victim of the day. Surprisingly, Kohli and Pujara both scored ducks, but Mayank Agarwal who scored his first century after 13 innings in Tests batted fluently and remained unbeaten on 120 at Stumps of day one. Ajaz Patel, the Mumbai-born Kiwi spinner bagged all the four wickets of the Indian batters which got fallen on the day. Apart from Agarwal’s ton and Patel’s efforts with the ball, the day also highlighted the controversial dismissal of the returning Indian skipper Virat Kohli.

It was not a happy return to cricket for Virat as he was given out LBW controversially by the third umpire Virender Sharma. The replays showed that Virat had hit the bat first but the umpire gave him out as Virat walked back into the pavilion with disbelief. Mayank Agarwal continued on his merry way of scoring runs as he brought up his fourth Test ton, all of which have come in the home conditions now. His last century, a big one, came against Bangladesh in Indore in 2019 when he had scored 243. Cheteshwar Pujara’s poor form in Tests continued yet again as this time he bagged naught, a tenth of his career.

Meanwhile, New Zealand will be looking to get the wicket of a well-set Mayank Agarwal on the second day morning before team India look to get to a big first-innings total. Apart from first day’s performer Ajaz Patel, Kiwis would also hope their seamers to do some damage and wrap up the Indian innings as quickly as possible.

Meanwhile, here are the important stats and numbers from India vs New Zealand, second Test day one:
