India vs South Africa, 2019: 2nd T20I – Statistical Preview

The much-awaited T20I series between India and South Africa didn’t start off as expected. The first of the 3-match T20I series to be played in Dharamsala was washed out due to continuous rain on Sunday night. This was the 2nd straight abandoned T20I between these two teams in India. The 3rd and final T20I of the series in 2015 were set to be hosted by Kolkata. The match was called off even before the toss due to wet outfield. The 2nd T20I match will now be played at the Mohali’s PCA Stadium on Wednesday.

All the key stats and numbers that matter ahead of the 2nd T20I match in Mohali:

0 – Number of T20Is that India won at home against South Africa. India faced South Africa twice during the series in 2015 and lost both while batting first. The Proteas are the only team that India failed to defeat in a T20I at home.


2 – India played two T20Is at the PCA Stadium in Mohali – against Sri Lanka in 2009 and against Australia in the 2016 WT20. The hosts won both the game by 6 wickets.


3 – Only the 3rd time the first match of India’s home season got abandoned/cancelled/washed out. The first game of the 1992/93 season was an ODI against England at the Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The match was cancelled due to security concerns caused by the disturbances in the city. During the 2007/08 home season, India faced Australia in Bangalore in an ODI. The match was called off after 52.4 overs of play.


4 – South Africa featured in four International matches in Mohali including two against India. South lost both the matches they played against the hosts at this venue (ODI in 1993 & Test in 2015) but won the remaining two against other opponents (vs Pakistan in CT 2006 and vs Netherlands in CWC 2011).


8 – India and South Africa clashed off in 13 T20Is till date with India winning in 8 while the Saffers in the remaining five. Australia (11) is the only team against which the South Africans have lost more T20I matches than they lost to India.


11 – Quinton de Kock will become the 11th captain of South Africa in the T20I format on Wednesday. The keeper-batsman has led the Proteas in two ODIs during the 2018 series in Sri Lanka. De Kock never led any team in his professional career apart from those two ODI matches.


341Rohit Sharma’s  341 runs in the T20I format against South Africa are the most by any player in IND-SA T20Is. The Indian limited-overs vice-captain amassed those 341 runs across ten innings at an average of 37.88. His maiden T20I ton back in 2015 which was against the Proteas only.


730 – David Miller has scored the 2nd most number of runs by any player in the Twenty20 format in Mohali. The South African amassed 730 runs from 29 innings at an average of 45.62 with help of a fifty and an unbeaten hundred.
