Three-match ODI series can sometimes be tricky to deal with, especially for a visiting team. And, it gets even trickier if the visiting side has lost the opening match of the series. There is so little time to recover, and even before you realize it, you are already fighting for survival. Going into the 2nd ODI against the Indian side, the West Indies side has its back against the wall.

The ‘Men in Maroon’ were hammered in the 1st ODI by a spirited Indian side, and are now fighting to stay alive in the series. The West Indian willow wielders cut a sorry figure with the bat in the 1st ODI. The top order failed to apply itself, as the Indian bowlers stamped their authority over the ‘Men in Maroon’.

Only Jason Holder scored a valiant half-century to lend some respectability to the total. The Kieron Pollard-led side failed to play out their 50 overs and were bowled out for just 176 in 43.5 overs.

India broke no sweat and easily chased down the target with 6 wickets and 132 balls to spare, as Rohit Sharma’s stint as the full-time Indian ODI captain started on a positive note. The ‘Hitman’ was in ominous form with the bat in the opening rubber and stroked a mellifluous 60. Sharma timed the ball beautifully, picked the gaps with elan, and carved out a mini-masterpiece.

Suryakumar Yadav once again showed why he might turn out to be a long-term option for the Indian side in the middle order department by scoring a valuable 34* in the 1st ODI. So, the situation is simple. If West Indies lose, they surrender the series. On the other hand, India will look to continue from where they left off in the 1st ODI and close out the series.

Pitch and Conditions

The ball will grip for the spinners on this surface. However, as Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav showed, if the batters can play the ball on merit, they can succeed on this surface. The team winning the toss might want to chase, as 4 out of the last 5 matches on this surface have been won by the side batting second.
