Former Sri Lanka cricketer Russel Arnold trolled the Windies team for their poor performance against India in the first of the two-match Test series in Rajkot. But fans were quick to slam the cricketer-turned-commentator for his tweet. The game was held at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot, which offered a pitch tailor-made for India’s run-hungry batsmen.
Debutant Prithvi Shaw set the tone for the Indian innings – the 18-year-old raced to his maiden Test century faster than a-run-a-ball. He was followed by skipper Virat Kohli. The captain was however calm and collected at the crease, and showed no urgency to score at a brisk rate. He patiently cantered to yet another Test century – his 24th – in only 123rd Test appearance.
Then it was Ravindra Jadeja’s turn to celebrate. Playing at his home ground, he was finally able to bring up his maiden Test century. Sizable contributions from Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant meant India ended the first innings with a mammoth 649 runs on the board.
Windies have no answers to India’s spin trio
In reply, the Windies were unable to come anywhere near India’s massive total. Mohammad Shami continued his fine form from the England tour and got two crucial breakthroughs early on. Once the spinners started operating, Ravichandran Ashwin wreaked havoc. Returning from an injury, the off-spinner bagged a four-wicket haul. The Windies were staring at a follow-on after they were bundled out for just 181.
The second innings saw Kuldeep Yadav lead the charge with the ball. Windies’ Kieran Powell was the only batsman who made an effort to stand his ground, but he wasn’t supported by anyone else. Inevitably, the visitors were skittled out for 196, handing India a massive victory by an innings and 272 runs. Prithvi Shaw bagged the Man of the Match in his very first Test appearance for his stylish knock up front.
Russel Arnold took to Twitter to poke fun at the Windies side, saying, “Can’t find the Test on any channels ? Is it over ?? Don’t tell me the Windies have done it!”
