India’s national selectors will meet on September 26 to pick the squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against the Windies at home and all eyes will be on the decision the wise men of Indian cricket take on Ravichandran Ashwin. The regular captain Virat Kohli, who was has been rested for the ongoing Asia Cup in Dubai, is set to return to international cricket through this series.

The Caribbean team, led by Jason Holder, will play five ODIs and three T20Is besides the Tests and a preceding warm-up game before between September 29 and November 11. They haven’t won a Test series in India since 1983-84 and are also playing a Test series in India for the first time since the great Sachin Tendulkar retired.

The reports in the Deccan Chronicle revealed that the selection panel led by MSK Prasad will be coming together to pick the Test squad for the upcoming series.

Is Ashwin fit?

The case of Ashwin is something the fans are interested on. The 31-year-old off-spinner had a decent start to the Test series in England but lost the plot subsequently. He suffered an injury in the third Test at Trent Bridge and bowled just one over in the first innings. He failed to make any impact in the fourth Test in Southampton with Kohli later admitting that he had aggravated his injury in that match.

Ashwin was dropped for the fifth and final Test and was replaced by Ravindra Jadeja. Recent reports said that he did not contact the cricket board of his state Tamil Nadu or the National Cricket Academy though he was spotted at an elite cricket conclave in Dubai during the Asia Cup.

It will be seen whether the selectors keep him in the squad for the Windies Tests. Ashwin has a much better bowling record at home (225 out of total 327 scalps) and also against the Caribbeans with whom he has 34 wickets in five games on home soil.

The selectors could have another tough task in choosing a winner between Hanuma Vihari and Karun Nair. The former overtook the latter and scored an impressive fifty on debut besides taking some wickets. However, Nair has a triple century in Tests at home and deserves more chances to represent India, as many felt.

In the bowling department, key member Bhuvneshwar Kumar is highly likely to make a comeback after a hiatus caused by his injury.
