It was not long ago that England thrashed India by an innings and 159 runs at Lord’s and they are still leading the five-match series, but talks surrounding the series are already showing them in a weaker light. But, Nick Compton, England Test opener and grandson of the legendary Dennis Compton, feels it is still some task for Team India to win the series from here on.
The visitors were almost written off from the series after their surrender in the second Test which gave England 2-0 lead. Virat Kohli’s men, however, came back strongly in the third Test in Trent Bridge to win it by 203 runs and make it 2-1 and their supporters have now started believing that the visitors have it in them replicate the feat Sir Don Bradman’s Australia achieved in 1936-37 when they beat England 3-2 after trailing 0-2.
England not yet out of the series
Compton, 35, however, begs to differ. “I don’t think England are out of this series just yet and winning three Tests on the bounce here is very tough for any visiting side. There will be some good, competitive cricket in the remaining matches, but I do not see India winning the series,” India TV cited reports quoting him as saying.
The cricketer has played 16 Tests for England since his debut in 2012 was also not impressed by India’s frequent chopping and changing their side. He feels such moves make it difficult for players like Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane.
“They (Pujara and Rahane) should be allowed to grow into stronger personalities in that dressing room. Now that Pujara and Rahane have scored runs, things will get easier for them. India won in Nottingham and hit upon a good team balance. There is no further reason for change. It will be interesting to see if Virat make any changes (for the fourth Test),” he said.
The fourth Test will be played in Southampton between August 30 and September 3 while the final Test will be played at The Oval between September 7 and 11.
