Team South Africa had a disappointing start to the six-match ODI series against the visiting Indian side. After having won the Test series, the hosts were expected to dictate terms in the limited overs cricket as well. However, a stellar all-round show from the Indian side saw the visitors draw first blood in the ODI series. One of the few positives for the Proteas from the match was their skipper Faf du Plessis.
Before Virat Kohli took over all the headlines of the match for his majestic ton, Faf du Plessis had also hit a century in the match. It was a rare occasion when captains from both sides scored centuries in the same ODI. Just when the Proteas fans had started taking positives in the performance of their skipper, they received a big blow in the series. Du Plessis was ruled out of the series following a finger injury.
Now, it has been confirmed that Faf du Plessis will miss out on the remainder of fixtures of the tour. He will not be participating in the ODIs and the T20Is against the Indian side. This has come as a big disappointment for the South African team. Meanwhile, it is worth noting that Du Plessis is not the first big name from the South African camp to get injured on the tour.
Even before the ODI series had commenced, star South African batsman AB de Villiers was ruled out of the first three ODIs of the series following an injury. And now, with their skipper Du Plessis out as well, the hosts certainly look like a much weaker unit. This is indeed disappointing for any cricket fan. Interestingly, earlier during the Test series, speedster Dale Steyn was injured as well.
Much like Faf du Plessis, even Steyn was ruled out from the remainder of the series. The Indian fans recently sympathized with the South African team and the South African fans. They showed their respect for the iconic players like Du Plessis and AB de Villiers.
Here is what the Indian fans tweeted:
South Africa will be missing the services of both AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis in an ODI for the first time since January 2009. #SAvIND

AB de Villiers and Faf Du Plessis got their finger injured. Now Sachin Tendulkar is wondering why Steve Buckner didn't play for South Africa?

Aiden Markram is considered lucky who brought @ICC trophy at home when he won 2014 U19 world cup as captain. This is one of reasons he has been assigned skipper job in ongoing series albeit he got it due to @faf1307 injury. #SAvsInd #ODI
