Back in July 2017, Sunil Subramanian, Tamil Nadu’s former Test captain, was appointed as India’s administrative manager on a one-year contract. He joined the team prior to the second Test of India’s tour of Sri Lanka in Colombo on August 3. That was also the first instance when the Indian team got a full-time professional manager. He also has coached the likes Ravichandran Ashwin.

Earlier, the team used to appoint a team manager on a tour to tour basis. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) advertised for the role after which Subramanian was roped in. Recently, it has been learned that the manager is all set to get an extension of his contract after Ravi Shastri, the current head coach of the national team, praised him for his relentless efforts as per reports in Mumbai Mirror.

The ugly fallout between Anil Kumble and Virat Kohli was one of the primary reasons why the practice of full-time managers was introduced. The Indian skipper expressed his discomfort of working with the former cricketer. Subsequently, Kumble stepped down from his role. Later, the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) asked for a report after which Virat was given a clean chit.

Subramanian’s illustrious career

He didn’t have the privilege to don the national colours but was a stalwart in the Indian domestic circuit. He was primarily a left-arm spinner and was also a handy batsman. In 74 first-class and 28 List A matches, the veteran notched 285 and 33 wickets respectively. The Maharashtra-born cricketer also boasts of 22 five-wicket-hauls and four ten-wicket-hauls in domestic cricket.

The 51-year old also has 1096 and 119 runs in first-class and List A matches respectively. Apart from Tamil Nadu, Subramanian also represented Assam in domestic cricket. His made his debut back in the 1988/89 season and hung his boots after the 2000/01 season.
