As the Indians took on the Sri Lankans at Dambulla for the 1st ODI of the 5-match series, the action outside the field was as intensifying as the proceedings on the field. Four Indian women fans were ill-treated by a group of unruly Sri Lankan supporters. The Sri Lankan fans had very less to be happy about as their team was dominated by Virat Kohli and his men throughout the match. The chants of the Indian fans left them frustrated as there was no stopping the Indian team.

It started with a friendly battle of chants but soon turned into a matter of pride with the fans taking it seriously and personally. The Indian women fans answered the verbal chants from the Sri Lankans fans in a harsh way turning the matter ugly. Things became worse during the start of the second innings when the Sri Lankan supporters tried to get under the skin of the Indian ladies. The policemen had to interfere to calm down the proceedings and prevented it from being a nasty affair.

However, the devastating loss for Upul Tharanga and his side proved costly for the team and the board. The fans lost their cool and surrounded the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) office hurling abuses at them. They also shouted at the team bus even before the players could board it.

“You get frustrated. Am I angry with the players? Absolutely not. The players work as hard as anyone can ask of them. They’ve been superb. Support staff have been out of this world. Brilliant. They work endless hours with planning and helping the boys. You can’t fault anyone within that changing room,” Sri Lanka’s Interim Coach Nic Pothas said in a press conference.

Batting first Sri Lanka were bundled out by the Indians for a mere score of 216. The Indian run chase looked like a cakewalk with Shikhar Dhawan continuing his magical form with the bat. The left handed genius scored a swashbuckling hundred as he treated the Sri Lankan bowlers like kids in the park. Skipper Virat Kohli was outstanding in his supporting role as India chased down the target in the 29th over with the loss of one wicket. Dhawan remained not out on 132 while Kohli finished at 82.
