India’s new opening pair of Mayank Agarwal and Rohit Sharma had played the first-ever pink ball tournament – the 2016/17 Duleep Trophy for the India Blue team. Mayank represented them in all the three matches and opened the innings with skipper Gautam Gambhir. Rohit, on the other hand, featured in only the final after returning from the tour of West Indies.

Rohit Sharma wanted enough practice in the white jersey ahead of the home Test series against New Zealand. It was only one of the two non-Test first-class matches Rohit played since his Test debut in 2013. The Mumbaikar scored 30 and 32* in two innings of the game which they won by 355 runs. Mayank, however, put on impressive performances throughout the tournament.

The Karnataka opener scored at least fifty runs in all the five innings he played in the tournament. He scored 420 runs at an impressive average of 84 and the then career-best of 161. The fifties in remaining four innings helped Agarwal to finish as the 2nd highest run-getter of the tournament.
