India’s participation in this year’s Champions Trophy still remains in jeopardy due to the ongoing tiff between the Board of Control for Control in India (BCCI) and International Cricket Council (ICC). BCCI has recently rejected the proposal for a new revenue model by the ICC while supporting the Big Three model even though they were offered an additional USD 100 million in the proposed format.

Media reports quoted a BCCI source in Dubai confirming the fact that the current chairman of the International Cricket Council, Shashank Manohar, who has been surprisingly supporting the opposing revenue model being a former president of the BCCI, offered the amount with a given deadline. But the BCCI seemed adamant about their demands as they look to not consider the offer.

“Yes, ICC chairman Shashank Manohar gave us an offer of an additional USD 100 million in the new financial model. In fact, he gave us a deadline to get back to him. From our end, we won’t get back to him as we don’t even consider it an offer” said the BCCI source according to oneindia.com.

When asked about the reason for rejection of the proposed model, the anonymous source cited out the trust deficit between BCCI and ICC. Currently, BCCI receives a revenue of about USD 590 million from the ICC. But with the implementation of the new model, the share of revenue of the BCCI would be drastically cut down by 50% at USD 290 million.

The source mentioned that BCCI is still discussing a diplomatic agreement with ICC regarding the issue and vehemently stated that Manohar does not get to call the shots about BCCI’s share.

“The offer came from Manohar. He is the chairman but ICC is a members’ body and the chairman doesn’t decide who gets what share of the pie. It’s the members who decide. We are still working on the formula with all nations. They are receptive. Mr Manohar doesn’t decide what should be BCCI’s share,” added the source.

BCCI was supposed to announce their Champions Trophy squad today as they reached the deadline date for the same. But the Indian board is in no hurry to make the announcement until their demands are met. According to NPA, BCCI has the right to even pull out of the tournament.

“We are assuring the member nations that even if our share remains Rs 500, we promise to create a model to increase their share to Rs 200. But please have faith that we can propose a revenue generation model.Tell me one thing, if we name the squad, say for example on May 5, will ICC bar us from participation. We have a settled squad and naming it is a mere formality,” concluded the source.
