Gujarat skipper Parthiv Patel hurt the middle finger of his left hand while keeping wickets during the ongoing Ranji Trophy quarterfinal clash against Bengal at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Sunday.  Few minutes before the Lunch break, Parthiv fell on the ground in severe pain after unsuccessfully collecting the ball behind stumps.

He left the field immediately and did not return for the rest of the day. Anuj Rawal the reserve wicketkeeper came in as a substitute and kept wickets for Gujarat for the rest of the day 4. His finger had taken multiple blows and was damaged severely which forced him to retire for the day.

“He got hit twice or thrice on his finger and it was hurting badly. Not sure what the update is on his injury though,” Manprit Juneja, Gujarat batsman, said at the end of day’s play, as reported by Cricbuzz.

This is the Gujarat skipper’s second comeback in Test cricket in the last one year. In November, he made the cut into the squad against England as a replacement for Wriddhiman Saha. He played his first Test in eight years, having missed 83 Test matches between appearances. He has now made it to the squad set to tour South Africa after ending their long home season on a high.

This injury comes as a scare weeks before the team heads to the African country but Gujarat’s head coach Vijay Patel confirmed that Parthiv, who has been selected as the backup keeper for India for the upcoming Test series in South Africa, has suffered only a minor injury and it wouldn’t take too long to heal.

As for the match, Bengal lead by 613 runs on Day 4 and a Herculean and perhaps an impossible task lies ahead of Gujarat. Parthiv scored 47 and Bhargav Merai was the leading run-scorer in the first innings with 67 runs. Abhimanyu Easwaran scored a century in both the innings and Wittick Chatterjee is batting at 213.
