The Gujarat Lions knew they had an uphill task at hand when they locked horns with the Mumbai Indians. MI hosted the Lions for their third home game of the season. They did a fantastic job on the night to register their fourth win of the season. With the win at their fortress over the Lions, the Mumbai Indians camp has managed to move to the top of the points table.

Coming into the game, both teams came in riding on wins from their previous match. Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to field first. Gujarat Lions had a disappointing start to the match as they lost Dwayne Smith for a duck. It was a magnificent fifty from Brendon McCullum that served as the anchor role for the team. Suresh Raina also chipped in with a cameo and a late flourish from Dinesh Karthik saw the Lions finish with 176/4 in their 20 overs.

In the run chase, Mumbai Indians also had a dismal start with Parthiv Patel getting out on a duck. Jos Buttler got a start but failed to get going. But it was a fifty from Nitish Rana and an unbeaten 40 from Rohit Sharma that saw MI chase down the target with 6 wickets in hand. Kieron Pollard also chipped in with a contribution of 39 that took the game away from Gujarat.

Here are the Mumbai Indians Player Ratings of the MIvGL encounter:

Parthiv Patel – 1/10

Parthiv Patel had a very disappointing outing in the middle today. Patel was sent back to the pavilion after having played just 2 balls on the day. He failed to score a run and a duck is all that he managed against the Lions. In the run chase, a lot of eyes were glued on Patel as the team needed a quick start. Patel failed to give that and that sees him fetch low scores in the ratings as well. Behind the stumps, he had a decent day at work.

Jos Buttler – 5/10

While Parthiv Patel was big a failure with the bat on the day, his opening partner Jos Buttler looked promising. Buttler started off cautiously to see the first couple of overs through. He then started taking on the bowlers and had a few free flowing shots going into the game. Not all shots fetched him rewards but he got a start anyway. He hit a couple sixes along with a four during his stay at the crease. He returned with 26 runs in just 24 balls.

Nitish Rana – 8.5

Hard hitting Mumbai batsman Nitish Rana won the match yet again for his side. Rana scored yet another fifty this season. He scored a quick 53 off just 36 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes. Rana did not let the opposition bowlers settle in on the day.

While Buttler struggled with his shots at one end and got very little rewards for the big shots, Rana ensured he cleared the fences whenever he took charge in the match. With a strike rate of 147.22 to his name, Rana absolutely blew the opposition away with his heroics. In the process, he also went on to win the Orange Cap. He now has 193 runs to his name in the tournament.

Rohit Sharma – 7/10

Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma was under immense pressure coming into this game. He had four single digit scores prior to this game and hence had to perform in this game. A lot of talk was around the law of averages catching up on Rohit and that is exactly what perspired in the match.

He came in to bat at number 4 and took his time to settle in the crease. He ensured that he does not let his weaknesses get exposed in front of the spinners on the day. Rohit remained unbeaten on 40 off just 29 balls. He hit 3 fours and a six in his knock. The Mumbai Indians skipper played a key role in the win for his side that took them to the top of the points table.

Kieron Pollard – 8/10

Kieron Pollard was the star of the show for Mumbai Indians in the previous match. It was his magnificent knock of 70 runs that had bailed out the side from deep waters of 7/4 in the previous match. Many speculated that the knock was a one match wonder from him. However, the big West Indies all-rounder proved that it is not the case.

He backed up his superlative knock with another impressive show with the bat. He manhandled the opposition bowlers on the day yet again. He slammed 39 off just 23 balls to finish with 2 fours and 3 sixes in his knock. His whirlwind knock is a big plus for the Mumbai camp.

Hardik Pandya – 3/10

The Pandya brothers have made it a habit to be in the thick of action when the Mumbai team hits the winning runs. This time around, against the Gujarat Lions, it was Hardik Pandya, who was present at the crease when MI registered their fourth win of the season.

He remained unbeaten on 6 off 3 balls with a four to his name. With the ball, he had a bad time though. In the only over that he bowled today, he gave away 15 runs and returned with no wickets to show in front of his name.

Krunal Pandya – 4/10

The services of Krunal Pandya were not required on a large scale today. The top order of the Mumbai Indians managed to get the score chased with 6 wickets in hand. Krunal did not get his chance to bat in the match. Earlier in the game, he got his opportunity with the ball. He bowled 3 overs on the day and gave away only 18 runs. He did not get a wicket but the way he controlled the run flow deserves some credit. He bowled at a time when Brendon McCullum was going great guns with the bat.

Harbhajan Singh – 8/10

Veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh seems to have redefined the word consistency. He has not conceded more than 30 runs in his bowling spells throughout the season till now. The story did not change against the Gujarat Lions either. Rohit Sharma used his services very well and the offie managed to choke the run flow during the innings.

Unlike the last few games, he was not handed the new ball straightaway but got his share of bowling in the powerplay. In the four overs that he bowled today, he gave away only 22 runs. He also bagged the priced wicket of Suresh Raina who had looked set at the crease.

Lasith Malinga – 3/10

Lasith Malinga was back in the playing eleven at the expense of pacer Tim Southee. Malinga failed to impress on his return though. He bowled his complete quota of 4 overs but leaked as many as 51 runs in his spell. He got the big fish in the form of Brendon McCullum though. McCullum was looking threatening with the bat and had already plundered 64 runs in the match. Despite the wicket, Malinga found it tough to creep in the batting lineup of the Lions.

Mitch McClenaghan – 6/10

Mitch McClenaghan was the most successive pacer of the Mumbai Indians lineup in the match. He gave the very early breakthrough when he dismissed the dangerman Dwayne Smith on a duck. He tried to keep things tight up front and that helped the team to a great extent.

Later in the match, he kept things under control in the slog overs as well. The Gujarat Lions batsmen were on a rampage towards the end but they found it tough going against McClenaghan. In the four overs that he bowled today, he gave away 24 runs and picked up 2 wickets.

Jasprit Bumrah – 2/10

Jasprit Bumrah was being tipped to be the bowler to watch out for in the match. However, the kind of returns he got would have only disappointed his fans. He got his complete share of overs in the match. He failed to pose a threat to the GL batsmen in the match. He gave away as many as 45 runs in his four overs with an economy of over 11 per over. He failed to get a wicket in the match.
