The Royal Challengers Bangalore have been hunting for wins but in vain this season. The story for the Gujarat Lions has not been any different either. Coming into their clash at Rajkot, both teams had similar fortunes. They had registered just one win prior to this game and were looking desperately for their second win. On the day, it was the visiting RCB unit that emerged victorious in a closely contested game.

The fortunes were with the Gujarat Lions at the toss. Suresh Raina won the toss and opted to bowl first. Royal Challengers Bangalore had an early jolt as they took the field without the services of AB de Villiers on the day. However, much to their relief, they did not miss his services much. Openers Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli stunned the opposition with a magnificent 122 run opening stand.

They blew away the opposition right from the word go. Gayle’s blitzkrieg of 77 and Kohli’s whirlwind 64 were well supported by the two quick cameos from Travis Head and Kedar Jadhav. RCB ended with a total of 213/2 in their 20 overs. In the run chase, Brendon McCullum singlehandedly paraded along to keep Gujarat Lions in the hunt. Ishan Kishan provided the brief scare towards the end with a quick 16-ball 39. But all that they could manage was 192/7 in the 20 overs. RCB won by 21 runs.

Here are the Royal Challengers Bangalore Player Ratings for the match:

Chris Gayle – 8.5/10

Chris Gayle returned back to supreme form in the match with a fifty. The RCB camp were a worried unit prior to the commencement of this game. Gayle, who has been a perennial performer for them, had largely failed in the couple of opportunities that he had got before this game. However, he silenced all critics with 77 runs to his name in just 38 balls.

Gayle also became the first batsman to score 10000 runs in the shortest format of the game. He started off slowly for the first few runs. But once he got into his groove, there was no looking back. He absolutely made a mockery of the Gujarat bowling. With 7 sixes and 5 fours to his name, Gayle was an absolute superstar on the day.

Virat Kohli – 8/10

Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli proved to be a very consistent performer for his team yet again. Kohli scored his second fifty of the season in just his third appearance this IPL. He added a crucial 122 run stand for the first wicket with the big Jamaican. He had started off very cautiously and was happy to play the second fiddle for major part of the partnership.

Kohli ended up with 64 runs to his name. He looked all set for his fifth T20 century but missed out on the opportunity. His knock came off just 50 deliveries and hit 7 fours and a six during his knock. His captaincy looked decent too. Also, he made some exciting saves in the field and was a supreme fielder.

Travis Head – 7/10

Travis Head came in the RCB lineup for the game and showd great character with the bat. He arrived at the crease in the 13th over when Chris Gayle had made the long walk back to the crease. Head got only a handful of balls to play but ensured he made the most out of the opportunity.

He added 54 runs with Kedar Jadhav towards the end that saw RCB end up with 213/2 in their 20 overs. In the 16 balls that he faced, he finished with an unbeaten 30 with 2 fours and a six to his name. Head certainly proved his place in the side. He gets 7 in the ratings.

Kedar Jadhav – 7/10

Kedar Jadhav was promoted up the order to bat. He came in to bat ahead of some of the bigger names like Shane Watson and Mandeep Singh. His onslaught towards the end kept the opposition in check. He bludgeoned them to all parts of the park and that pretty much took the game away from the Gujarat Lions.

Jadhav batted 16 deliveries during his unbeaten stay at the crease. He scored 38 runs with 5 fours and 2 sixes to his name. Jadhav’s strike rate in the innings was 237.50. It was perhaps his knock that gave the serious impetus to the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the match coming in to the defense of the target.

Mandeep Singh – 4/10

Mandeep Singh had very little to say in the match. He did not get his chance to bat kudos to some superlative batting effort by the RCB top order. Kedar Jadhav was promoted ahead of him in the lineup and hence Mandeep did not get his share to bat. However, he made his presence count. He was a live wire on the field. He took a brilliant catch off the bowling of Yuzvendra Chahal to send Dwayne Smith packing early on in the innings.

Shane Watson – 2/10

Shane Watson also did not have a lot to do in the match today. Even he did not get his chance with the bat and his services were not needed on the day. With the ball, he had a couple of overs to bowl and failed to leave an imprint on the game. He was taken away for 24 runs in the two overs that he bowled. Skipper Kohli did not give him more overs to bowl on the day.

Stuart Binny – 2/10

Much like Mandeep Singh and Shane Watson, the services of Stuart Binny were not needed either. Binny did not get his chance to bat in the game nor did he have a say with the ball. He was not given the ball in the match and all that the Karnataka all-rounder did was spend his time at the field. No catches came his way on the day and nothing much was left for him to contribute either.

Pawan Negi – 7/10

Pawan Negi walked in to the side as a key hard hitting batsman. However, he did not get a chance to bat. Unlike the previous matches, Negi was not left alone waiting for a chance to bowl. In this particular game, the skipper threw the ball to Negi at the very beginning. Negi grasped the opportunity with both hands as he bowled tight lines up front with the new ball in the powerplay.

He choked up the run flow in the powerplay and that created some serious pressure on the Gujarat Lions batsmen. Negi managed to outclass the Aussie batsman Aaron Finch and got him stumped by Dinesh Karthik. In the four overs that he bowled on the day, he returned with economical figures of 1/21.

Yuzvendra Chahal – 8/10

Young leggie Yuzvendra Chahal has managed to be a regular member of the Royal Challengers Bangalore lineup. He showed that the faith shown in him by skipper Virat Kohli and the RCB team management is worth keeping. Chahal was the pick of the bowlers for RCB in the innings. He ran through the Gujarat Lions top order with the ball.

He got the first breakthrough when he got the priced scalp of Dwayne Smith in the second over of the match. He then got rid of the opposition skipper Suresh Raina as well. Later in the game, he dismissed the big fish Brendon McCullum, who was looking absolutely threatening with the bat today. He returned with figures of 3/31 in his quota of 4 overs.

Sreenath Arvind – 2/10

Sreenath Arvind had a forgettable time with the ball tonight. The Gujarat Lions batsmen took special liking to his bowling. Towards the death overs, it was a certain Ishan Kishan who took him to the cleaners with some clean hitting.

Aravind could not do much and posed little or no threat to the opposition batsmen. He did manage to get a solitary wicket though. He dismissed Dinesh Karthik in the 11th over of the match. However, his overall figures took a pounding. He gave away 53 runs in 4 overs for his one wicket.

Adam Milne – 3/10

Adam Milne got an extended run in the Royal Challengers Bangalore. He was picked ahead of Tymal Mills in the lineup owing to his stellar show in his debut game the other night. However, the young Kiwi pacer was taken away for quite some runs on the day. He gave away 43 runs during his full quota of 4 overs.

He bowled with an economy of 10.75, which is definitely not very pleasing in the shortest format of the game. He picked up one wicket, that of Ishan Kishan in his final over on the day.
