After winning two consecutive games, Delhi Daredevils lost against a strong KKR side on Monday. This was their first defeat at home this year and with two losses and two wins, Daredevils are placed 4th in the points table. They fought well against KKR but just couldn’t get across the line in the last-over thriller.

They now face a daunting task of taking on Sunrisers Hyderabad at their home. The defending champions have a terrific record at home and are fresh from a thrilling win over Kings XI Punjab. Their bowling attack is arguably the best in the tournament with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Man of the Match in their last game for his career-best 5/19, leading the attack.

Delhi Daredevils haven’t yet settled on a combination as their batting order keeps changing almost every game. Angelo Mathews joined the squad ahead of the last game and that must be a big boost for DD. He along with Chris Morris can score quickly at the back end of the innings. It is the top order that is a bit of a worry for them. They have relied a lot on young Indian talent on coming good at the start of the innings. Samson and Pant have responded well, though Nair has largely struggled.

Not many changes are anticipated for DD going into this game. They are struggling to recognise which overseas player to play with and Mathews’ arrival has confused them further. Let us have a look at the predicted XI for Delhi Daredevils:

Openers (Sanju Samson and Karun Nair)

Agreed that Karun Nair hasn’t got going at all this year, but a man who has a recent Test triple hundred to his name cannot be ignored. Nair’s best bet is to open the innings and he has tasted success in that position before. Being a stroke-player, Nair can make good use of the fielding restrictions and play his shots to get back in touch. His partner would be Sanju Samson who is enjoying a rich vein of form this year.

He is topping the Daredevils batting charts so far and looks good for a few more. He also became the first batsman to smash a century in IPL 10 during his entertaining innings of 102 from 63 deliveries against Rising Pune Supergiant.

Middle Order (Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant and Angelo Mathews)

Iyer has looked in decent touch since making a return from an injury. He must take the No. 3 spot as he capable of playing the big shots. Rishabh Pant has been in good form and must not bat below the No. 4 spot. He clobbered the KKR bowlers around making a 16-ball 38 and treated Umesh Yadav with disdain. When he walked out to bat there were only 40 balls remaining in the innings.

There is only so much one could do batting down the order. Pant can make a greater impact at 4, as he has shown in the earlier games. Mathews will bring a lot of experience at no. 5 and is capable of playing those sparkling cameos late in the innings. Mathews can also give Zaheer Khan options as the former can be effective with his military medium pace.

Lower Middle Order (Chris Morris and Carlos Brathwaite)

Delhi must back their young batsman up the order and bat Morris and Brathwaite at 6 or 7. The top order batsmen can lay a solid platform for these two to come and explode later. There is no point in having specialist batters at this position as they won’t get too many opportunities to bat.

Brathwaite can come in the XI in place of Sam Billings. He can contribute with the ball with at least 2 overs as and when required. Morris is a crucial cog in DD’s wheels and has been in outstanding form with the ball. His 38* in 9 balls against Pune Supergiant shows what he can do with the bat if given a solid platform.

Bowlers (Amit Mishra, Shahbaz Nadeem, Zaheer Khan and Pat Cummins)

Mohammed Shami’s selection is a tricky one. Zaheer went ahead with Shami in the last game at the expense of Shahbaz Nadeem. The left-arm spinner has an economy rate of 4.9 after bowling 10 overs thus far this season. It is critical that he plays as he is more suited to the team’s combination. Shami can wait and he will get his chances later.

Amit Mishra will partner Nadeem with his leg-spin. Wrist spinners have been very effective this year and Mishra can be lethal with all those years of experience. Zaheer Khan, the skipper, and Patt Cummins will be the fast bowlers for Daredevils.
