The Kings XI Punjab were back to their happy hunting ground at Indore. They hosted the Mumbai Indians in their third home game of the season. In the first two matches that Kings played at the venue, they had notched up clinical wins. However, when they toured for their away games, they were handed severe defeats in three consecutive outings. Hence, getting back in Indore was the best that Kings hoped for.

However, as the things turned out to be, they had a very miserable time against the Mumbai Indians. They had started off on a high with their batsmen Shaun Marsh and Hashim Amla getting decent starts. Despite the regular fall of wickets, KXIP managed to be in command of the game. They were ably guided by a scintillating unbeaten 104 off just 60 deliveries by Hashim Amla.

Amla was well supported by Glenn Maxwell’s cameo. In the run chase, Mumbai Indians openers blew away the opposition. With over 80 runs in the powerplay, they looked on course for a chase of 198. After the departure of Parthiv Patel, it was Nitish Rana who piled on the agony for the Kings along with Jos Buttler. In the end, fifties from Rana and Buttler were good enough for Mumbai Indians to notch up their fifth win of the season to move to the top of the points table.

Here are the Mumbai Indians Player Ratings for the KXIP v MI encounter:

Parthiv Patel – 6/10

Parthiv Patel was exceptional with the bat on the night. He had a quiet time in the last couple of games and many had started doubting his credibility at the top of the order. Patel ensured that the faith shown in him by the team management does not go wasted. He batted superbly with Jos Buttler at the top of the order to set the platform for a brilliant win.

Parthiv scored a quick 37 off just 18 balls during his stay at the crease. He hit 4 fours and 2 maximums in his innings and looked in a sublime form. Patel added 81 runs for the first wicket in just 29 balls along with Jos Buttler. It was the opening stand that gave no chance to the opposition.

Jos Buttler – 8.5/10

Jos Buttler was a juggernaut with the bat on the day. The world cricket knows how threatening can Jos be on his day. He is a fearless striker of the cricket ball and is capable of using the long handle to the best use. However, his quiet tournament thus far was a point of concern for the Mumbai team.

He came in with an intent today and took the attack to the bowlers right from the word go. He stitched an 81-run stand off just 29 balls for the opening wicket with Parthiv Patel. He scored a fifty in the game and then started off accelerating even more. He ended up with a score of 77 in the match. The knock came off just 37 deliveries with 7 fours and 5 sixes to his name. He hit the ball with strike rate of 208/11.

Nitish Rana – 9/10

Coming into the game, Nitish Rana had been the most successful batsman from the Mumbai team. Rana continued his merry run with the bat. He went on to score his third fifty in the tournament and stamped his authority on the game. By the time the match ended, Rana had ensured that he now proudly holds the Orange Cap in the tournament.

In the match, he came in to bat at the dismissal of Parthiv Patel. He never let the absence of Patel feel at the crease. He scored 62 off just 34 balls in the match. His knock was studded with 7 sixes in the game. He finished off the match in style with a six.

Rohit Sharma – 4/10

Skipper Rohit Sharma did not have a lot to do on the day as well. He could have come at number 3 after the dismissal of Parthiv Patel. But the Mumbai skipper chose not to. He promoted Nitish Rana ahead of himself and opted to stay back in the dugout. Also, with the dismissal of Jos Buttler, all eyes were on Rohit to come in and finish off the game for the side. But yet again, a selfless skipper sent Hardik Pandya to finish off the proceedings ahead of him in the game.

Hardik Pandya – 7/10

Hardik Pandya has made it a habit to be at the crease at the time of finishing the game. He continued doing the same in this particular game as well. He played the ideal support to Nitish Rana towards the end and looked in some serious haste to wrap up the game. He scored an unbeaten 15 off just 4 deliveries with 2 fours and a six to his name. Also, earlier in the game, he bowled with the new ball today. He bowled two overs first up and ended up giving away 18 runs. He failed to pick up a wicket though.

Krunal Pandya – 5/10

Krunal Pandya was the pick of the bowlers for the Mumbai Indians in the game. The all-rounder bowled with precision and guile in the match. He was one of the economical bowlers on the day when the batsmen ruled the roost. He picked up a wicket on the day. In the 4 overs that he bowled today, he gave away only 29 runs. He took the wicket of Wriddhiman Saha with a beauty to dismantle the wood work of the KXIP wicketkeeper.

Kieron Pollard – 5/10

Kieron Pollard had been the star performer for the team in the last two games. On the day against the Kings XI Punjab, the services of Pollard were not largely needed. Pollard did not get a chance in the batting department. Earlier in the day, he was not even handed the ball during the Kings innings. However, the big West Indies all-rounder made his presence felt on the day. He took two good catches in the game and was a live wire on the field.

Harbhajan Singh – 5/10

It was very surprising to see Harbhajan Singh bowl just 2 overs in the game. In the previous matches, the Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma had shown faith in Harbhajan in the powerplay. But on the day, he did not hand over the new ball to Harbhajan Singh. The veteran Indian cricketer bowled just 2 overs in the match and gave away only 12 runs in those overs. He did not get a wicket in the game though.

Mitch McClenaghan – 4/10

Mitch McClenaghan was the most successful bowler for Mumbai Indians throughout the last season. This year, he has looked like a totally different bowler. He has failed to be the ideal bowler in the powerplays and in the death overs.

He has been able to scalp the wickets at regular intervals but has failed in containing the run flow with the ball. On the day, he leaked as many as 46 runs in his four overs. He picked two wickets in the game though – the most by any bowler in the match. He had dismissed Marcus Stoinis for just 1. Earlier in the game, he got the wicket of Shaun Marsh as well.

Lasith Malinga – 1/10

Lasith Malinga had the worst outing that he has ever had in the history of the tournament. In the four overs that he bowled on the day, he was taken away for 58 runs. The Kings XI Punjab batsmen made Malinga look very ordinary and the Sri Lankan pacer could not pose any threat to the batsmen.

Hashim Amla, in particular, took a special liking to Malinga in the game and hit him for quite a few long shots. A 97 meter long six justified how good he was reading Malinga at the venue on the given day. If MI wishes to get their act perfect, they need Malinga to come up with better shows.

Jasprit Bumrah – 5.5/10

Jasprit Bumrah was arguably the best bowler for the Mumbai Indians in the match. He bowled with sheer pace and aggression. In the last couple of games, Bumrah was seen missing his lengths in the death overs. That is something that had taken a heavy toll on his bowling during those games.

However, playing against the Kings XI Punjab, Bumrah had the problem sorted and back at his best. He bowled his complete quota of 4 overs and gave away only 30 runs. Bumrah got the big wicket of Glenn Maxwell in the match as well. Maxwell was looking very threatening with the bat and Bumrah certainly got the big fish.
