To say that the Mumbai Indians pulled off a miraculous victory is an understatement. The Kolkata Knight Riders were missing the spark that they had in their first game from the very first ball they faced today. After a few early heroics by Gambhir and Lynn, things looked faded for KKR. In fact, they were. But, there was their only Knight, Manish Pandey who guided their Team to post a decent total of 179. But was it the total that was not enough or their bowling which was not? Or, is the T20 a format that can swing all ways till the last ball is bowled?

MI, in fact, did look seriously troubled after Pollard departed, but this has been the occasion of their domestic players stepping the game up. Nitish Rana played a gem of an innings, and Hardik Pandya has dominated in the last over one more time. Gautam Gambhir has suffered two shocks today:  First, the defeat. Second, Chris Lynn’s injury. Why the skipper himself sat out in the last few overs also remains a mystery. So, MI have made a comeback and registered their first points in the game.

A look at how the MI players fared in today’s match:

Parthiv Patel- 4/10

His hit-and-miss 30 off 27 came to a halt after Kuldeep provided KKR with their first breakthrough with his wrong ‘un. While at it, Parthiv played some beautiful shots but the innings was a short one, and he didn’t deliver when the situation demanded him to. Apart from that, nothing impressive behind the stumps either.

Jos Buttler- 3/10

The first time we missed DRS in this match. An unlucky decision. The decision was harsh on him, but what the umpire calls, remains. So, after a few early hits, Buttler made a start and got out, again. 28 off 22, this time.

Nitish Rana- 8.5/10

It was Nitish Rana who hit a blazing 50 off 29 balls to revive lost hopes in a chase like that. Rana showed intent right from the start and even though his side lost three wickets in quick succession. He took on Yadav, Rajpoot and even Boult to eventually decrease the deficit. Things for MI were looking good until the time he was at the crease with Pandyalongsidede. But, his dismissal provided a glimmering hope for KKR too.

He showed intent and became the only player in the side to make it count and play a knock that mattered.

Rohit Sharma- 4/10

A good day in the field for him as Captain, apart from his team’s inability to tame Manish Pandey. A bad day with the bat though. If you thought that the Buttler decision was a bad one, one can’t begin to imagine what you must have felt like about Rohit’s.

DRS was missed one more time. There was a clear inside edge, but the umpire didn’t spot it and gave it out. Rohit was fuming after the decision, and his eventual gestures meant that he was reprimanded for showing dissent.

Krunal Pandya- 6/10

He was extremely promising with the ball as he took three big wickets of Gambhir, Uthappa and Pathan. ‘Pandya’ was all over the scoreboard, because it was like “I bowl, you catch” between the Pandya brothers, for the two of the dismissals that Krunal inflicted. He was also the most economical among the bowlers with 24 conceded in 4 overs.

However, he failed to impress with the bat and was departed for 11 off 6.

Kieron Pollard- 4.5/10

He scored a run-a-ball 17, and while at it, he was looking cautious in the hope to hold on to his wicket. However, in the attempt to hit a short ball, he gave his wicket to Chris Woakes. With the major threat of Pollard is gone, KKR looked back in the game, temporarily.

He did not bowl today. But was involved in some excellent fielding and catches.

Hardik Pandya- 6.5/10

He dominated in the last over for  the second consecutive match. He held on to his nerves and made sure he utilized the opportunity whenever he got the strike, whether it was with Rana or with Harbhajan. He hit the winning runs as he exploited Boult’s expensive over. Luck was with him because of the sloppy misfields from KKR, but his 29 off 11 was a heroic cameo, nevertheless.

He did not bowl today. But took 2 catches, so points for that too.

Harbhajan Singh-  4.5/10

He bowled 4 overs, was economical as he conceded just 27 runs, but was wicketless. Apart from that, he did not have the opportunity to score more than 1 run either.

Lasith Malinga- 5/10

He stepped into the game after taking a fresh hat-trick in the country, and there’s hardly a time where he goes wicketless. He picked the wickets of Suryakuamr Yadav, who was looking to get it a full fledged partnership along with Pandey. Then, he dismissed Chris Woakes who was sent back before causing any damage. Though 36 runs were conceded in his 4 overs, he was best among the fast bowlers.

Mitchell McClenaghan- 2.5/10

An extremely bad day for him today, not because he took the lone wicket of Sunil Narine but because of the last over he was hit for by Pandey. With 51 runs conceded in the 4 overs, he was the most uneconomical of the lot.

Jasprit Bumrah- 3.5/10

He bowled 4 overs, conceded 39 runs and picked only one wicket. But, it was a huge wicket considering it was Chris Lynn, who is in unassailable form. It is also a bigger deal because Lynn does not struggle against pace, and also because the opening partnership broke. But, apart from that Bumrah had no wickets to boast about today.
