The Rising Pune Supergiant hosted the Kolkata Knight Riders in the match 30 of the Indian Premier League 2017. During the game, the players of KKR were seen wearing black armbands. Many wondered what the black armbands were for. The reason behind wearing the bands was to remember the martyrs of the Sukma Attack. The CRPF (Center Reserve Police Force) soldiers were attacked by the Maoists on April 25.

As many as 25 CRPF jawans were killed in the brutal attack by the Naxalites in Sukma in the state of Chhattisgarh. There were a total of 99 Jawans deployed at the place. It was a party of 36 troops that became the target of the attackers. As per the reports, the Maoists were closely monitoring the movements of troops and launched their attack when the CRPF Jawans were having their lunch.

The Maoists took the soldiers by surprise and killed 25 of them. They had as many as 13 AK series assault rifles and 5 INSAS rifles. There were as many as 3420 live rounds of various rifles. One of the top CRPF officers had remarked that the troops had already finished their lunch but some on-duty guards noted that a few of them were still having lunch.

This is not the first attack made on the Jawans in Chhattisgarh – a state that is infiltrated by the Naxalites. A senior officer noted that even the arms used by the attackers were looted by the soldiers. “It is very likely that these UBGLs were looted from security forces only. That could be as recent as the incident where 12 CRPF men were killed in Sukma on March 11,” a senior officer said.

The cricket fraternity were definitely unhappy about the incident and some of them had also taken to social media to show their condolences for the departed souls. During the match, KKR player Manish Pandey was on the microphone when the commentators asked him about the armband.

The KKR batsman revealed it was for the martyrs of the attack and quoted it as a very sad and unfortunate event.
