As we gear up for the 10th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) Defending Champions Sunrisers Hyderabad will look to put in their extra yard and clinch their 2nd consecutive IPL title in as many years. With the squad Hyderabad consists of, it won’t be a surprise if the prediction turns into a reality as the franchise consists of some amazing players who has the capability to turn the match on its head within a blink of an eye.

Hyderabad came into the reckoning in 2013 when Deccan Chargers were ousted from the tournament citing financial dues as the reason. Over the past 3 years, the team has gelled as a unit and slowly but steadily developed into a force to reckon with. With arguably the best bowling attack in the tournament, Hyderabad will go into the 10th edition of the tournament as one of the firm favourites.

Strengths

To start with, Hyderabad boasts of an opening pair who can decimate any top bowling attacks on their given day. With southpaws, David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan upfront, the opposition bowling line ups might be in for a nightmare especially on a day when both goes hammers and tongs.

While Warner has been a consistent performer for Hyderabad and has led his troops to perfection, Dhawan on the other hand wasn’t at his best last year and will look to get back to some run-scoring form ahead of the Champions Trophy title defence in June if he harbours any hope of making comeback to the national team.

The middle order comprises of arguably the cleanest striker of the ball in world cricket, Yuvraj Singh. With his exceptional comeback in the limited overs series against England very recently, opposition bowlers will be a worried unit as everyone is aware of the fact that when Yuvraj hits it always stay hit. He has the ability to change the complexion of the game within an over and also gives his captain a handy few overs in between.

In the bowling department, Hyderabad boasts of some exceptional limited overs bowlers who has the ability to turn the game around and knows how to slow the game down. Bangladesh left-arm seamer Mustafizur Rahman who will miss tomorrow’s encounter against Royal Challengers is expected to be back by 7th which will surely bolster their chances going into the tournament.

One of the biggest buys of the tournament this year is none other the Afghan teenage leg-spinner Rashid Khan who was bought at a whopping price of Rs. 4 crores. It will surely be a life changing moment for Rashid and he will be looking forward to gaining a lot from this experience of rubbing shoulders with some of the very best in the game. Ben Cutting will be another important player for SRH with his all-round abilities.

The Indian fast bowling duo of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ashish Nehra has proved to be a potent weapon for Warner in the previous edition. Bhuvi was brilliant with both the new and the old ball and was exceptional especially in the death overs. He was the biggest takeaway for India in the tournament and will look to add some more to his kitty along with Nehra. The left-arm seamer who has been around for ages will be looking forward to yet another successful IPL stint.

Weakness

The major weakness of the defending champions lacks in their middle order. It is devoid of experience and if the top order fails it remains to be seen, how the young middle order responds to the precarious situation. Deepak Hooda has the ability to clear the ropes on a consistent basis but hasn’t been in the best of forms of late so expectations from him are low this time around.

Mohammad Siraj, a relatively unknown commodity was bought at a whopping 2.6 crores in the IPL auction which might not prove to be a sensible ploy by the franchise. With no experience in playing in the tournament, Siraj might struggle to cope with the tremendous pressure and might fade away into oblivion like many former IPL stars.

Despite their drawbacks, Hyderabad has always relied on their strengths and has always understood their limitations better than their opposition that is why they are the defending champions of the tournament.

Opportunities

It will be a huge opportunity for the defending Champions to become the first team in the tournament to win back to back titles. With the sensational bowling line-up, Hyderabad possesses their dream might well become a reality come 21st May.

The absence of Mustafizur Rahman from the opening match might make way for another foreigner who might well seize the opportunity even though the cutter-specialist walks into the squad as soon as he comes back. With Naman Ojha nearing the twilight of his career, it remains to be seen how the wicket keeper batsman fares in the tournament.

Threats

With some biggest names of T20 cricket around in the tournament, Sunrisers Hyderabad will be wary of the fact that any hiccups through the tournament might cost them the opportunity to win their 2nd consecutive IPL title. Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders have been the two most consistent teams in the tournament and it will be difficult for the defending champions to get past them.

On the other hand, Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiant will look forward in making their last IPL a memorable one. The teams comprise of some of the biggest names in T20 cricket and with the tournament being their last one before Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals rejoin, it will be a big opportunity for them to finish the tournament with their first and the last IPL title.

Threats pertaining to injury, which has been the case for most franchises doesn’t seem to be the case with Hyderabad. There is hardly a player in the squad who is carrying a niggle or anything of that sort. The only absentee from the opening match will be Mustafizur who is expected to join on 7th April.
