The 2018 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was the year of Indian skippers. Apart from the lone figure of Kane Williamson leading the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), the men leading each of the seven other teams were from the very country that conceived the cricketing extravaganza. The question is: will these captains continue into the 2019 edition of the tournament?

Considering the fact the 2019 World Cup will be knocking on the doors by the time we get to witness the next season of the IPL, several high-profile players, including regular captains, may be rested, in order to protect them from any injuries ahead of the all-important world tournament. In such a situation, the need for alternatives to captain the IPL franchises is bound to arise. Let’s take a look at 3 probable candidates for captaincy in IPL 2019 who went unsold this time around.

1. Eoin Morgan

31-year-old Eoin Morgan is reputed for being a prolific English cricketer and had played for the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) back in 2017. Since he was able to score only 65 runs in the 4 games he played, Morgan went unsold in the 2018 IPL auction. However, the man is an able captain, capable of power-hitting and can very well be expected to take on the leadership role come the 2019 season of the league.

Morgan, on his part, has had a healthy run in 2018. He captained England in the Trans-Tasman T20 Trophy and lead from the front as he remained unbeaten on 80 runs off 75 balls to help his team to a 2-run victory over the Kiwis. Although England was unable to make it to the finals of the tri-series, Morgan took to captaincy like a fish to water. He’s also lead the Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in three games earlier this year.
