Over the last few seasons of the IPL, if there has been a team that has struggled to get their act correct on paper and on the field on a frequent basis, then it has been the Delhi Daredevils camp. It has been disheartening to see a bunch of young cricketers from the Daredevils often winning hearts, but rarely claiming the match glories. They are yet to win an IPL title and this pretty much sums up the above two statements.
Coming in to the IPL auctions, the Delhi Daredevils were keen on working their plans well this time around. And as the things turned out to be, it seems that they have finally found suitable combinations. They have managed to rope in the services of veteran Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir. This, in itself, is a big buy considering the fact that Gambhir has exceptional leadership qualities.
All the franchises had a purse of INR 80 crore as they headed in to the auctions. The teams were allowed to pick up a maximum of 25 players. This includes a maximum of 8 overseas players. Interestingly, only four teams could manage to bag 25 players in the auctions. One among those four teams were the Delhi Daredevils.
Big buys and the average expenditure
The DD camp utilized all the options available to fill in all overseas slots. After all the expenditures, they were still left with INR 78.4 crore. The player who bagged the highest bid from the Delhi camp was Australian batsman Glenn Maxwell. Maxwell was the star of the IPL 2014 when he had played for the Kings XI Punjab. DD gave away INR 9 crore to fetch his services for the upcoming edition of the tournament.
Another overseas player, Kagiso Rabada, also got big money from the Daredevils. The DD camp gave away INR 4.2 crore to retain the services of the South African pacer. DD used their RTM to get back the services of Rabada. Among the Indian cricketers, two spinners bagged mega deals from the Delhi Daredevils. Leggie Amit Mishra was bought for INR 4 crore. Meanwhile, Jharkhand spinner Shahbaz Nadeem was bought for INR 3.2 crore.
In all, Delhi Daredevils shelled out INR 78.4 crore at the auctions for their 25 players. Hence, their average expenditure on each turned out to be INR 3,136,000 or INR 3.174 crore.
