IPL 2018: BCCI approves the use of DRS in the tournament

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set to enter in its new decade this year when it will commence on April 7. All the eight franchises have rejigged their teams in the mega-auction that took place in January and are aiming to win the tournament. Also, two of the most celebrated teams Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals are returning after serving the two-year suspension. However, the BCCI has approved the use of Decision Review System during the tournament much to the joy of all the teams.
Currently, DRS is being used in the ongoing third edition of Pakistan Super League (PSL) and IPL will become the second T20 tournament to make use of the technology to make decisions. The standard of cricket played in the cash-rich T20 league is so high that the poor umpiring decisions would mar the contest. The issue had come up last year itself when the umpiring had come under the scanner during the course of the few matches.
BCCI shortlists panel of 10 domestic umpires
The top BCCI official confirmed the news of BCCI giving the green signal to use Decision Review System during IPL to Indian Express. “The BCCI was keen to have DRS on board for quite some time but it was only this year we felt we should go ahead with it for the IPL. We have the best of all other systems in place, so why not DRS? Anyway, we have been using it for India’s international matches for over a year and a half now,” he said.
According to the reports, the Indian board has also shortlisted 10 domestic umpires for a session on DRS in Vizag. The ICC umpires’ coach Denis Burns and the experienced umpire Paul Reiffel have briefed all the 10 officials about the available technology.
The news is surely a good one for the tournament as more correct decisions will be made during the matches and any team wouldn’t be suffering due to the poor umpiring. Every team will be allowed only one unsuccessful review during each innings according to the rules of ICC.
