IPL 2018: Five bowling spells that went in vain

T20 is not a format for the bowlers. We seldom find them consistently returning with good figures. Until you’ve got some mystery about your bowling, it is tough to succeed on a regular basis. Even the best in the business are not always consistent and always have to keep rediscovering themselves to succeed in the format. Bowlers keep adding various variations into their armoury to outfox the batsmen. Their variations sometimes work wonders for them and they provide some brilliant performances. However, these efforts are not always sufficient to win their teams the games. We’ve witnessed this happen this season when the batsmen let the bowlers down. Here are the best five bowling spells that went in vain: 1. Ankit Rajpoot | 4-0-14-5 vs SRH Ankit Rajpoot. (Photo by Surjeet Yadav/IANS) Seldom do we find a player from the losing team win the ‘Man of the Match’ award. But, Ankit Rajpoot in the game against SRH was so brilliant that they were forced to award him the player of the match despite being on the losing side. He bowled a mind-boggling spell only to see his team lose the game. This was the only five-wicket haul this season. Ankit was spitting fire out at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium as he swung the ball both the ways at a brisk pace. He sent the top-four SRH batsmen queuing back to the pavilion within no time. In fact, he dismissed the leading run-scorer of the season, Kane Williamson for a duck. KXIP’s misfortunes in the field helped SRH get to 132. It was all Punjab game for the first 33.3 overs. Then came the brilliance from SRH bowlers. As soon as they got a break, they never let any of the incoming batsmen settle. They kept picking wickets bowling KXIP out for 119 and won the game by 13 runs. 2. Andre Tye | 4-0-16-4 vs MI Kings XI Punjab’s Andrew Tye celebrates fall of Suryakumar Yadav’s wicket. (Photo by IANS) KXIP went into this game in the absence of Mujeeb Ur Rahman. His absence affected them a great deal as Tye was the lone warrior in their bowling line up. He bowled brilliantly but his efforts weren’t enough to see his side through. MI scored 186 in the first innings. If we remove Andrew Tye’s overs, they scored 170 of the other 16 overs in the game showing how crucial his spell was. Tye picked the wickets of dangerous batsmen like Suryakumar Yadav, Evin Lewis, Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya. However, he didn’t get much of support from the other bowlers. KL Rahul was the lone warrior in their batting line up. He scored 94 off 60 on a difficult track but his side fell short by 3 runs. Had Tye got some better support from the other bowlers, KXIP could have easily won this game. 3. Mayank Markande | 4-0-23-4 vs SRH Mayank Markande. (Photo Source: Twitter) This was another bowling performance against the Sunrisers that was wasted. Mumbai Indians lost their second game in the tournament with this one. Yet again, was a close fought one and the result was only decided in the last over of the match. Sunrisers Hyderabad bowled brilliantly to restrict MI to 147 in 20 overs at the Wankhede. Evin Lewis was the leading run-scorer for MI with 29 runs. A collective effort from the SRH bowlers ensured Mumbai doesn’t post a big total. Chasing this small total, SRH made a complete mess of it initially. After they looked in a good position to win the game when they were 135/5 in the 18th over, they lost wickets in quick succession building up the pressure. Markande picked the important wickets of Dhawan, Saha, Manish and Shakib putting SRH in trouble. But, Deepak Hooda maintained his cool towards the end to help the visitors bag a 1-wicket win. 4. Andrew Tye | 4-0-34-4 vs RR Andrew Tye of Kings XI Punjab. (Photo by Surjeet Yadav/IANS) It was another crucial encounter for the Kings XI Punjab. They had to win this game to make it easier for them to reach the qualifiers. They were expected to defeat the Rajasthan Royals quite easily. However, there was Jos Buttler standing in between the victory for KXIP and a loss. He was the difference between both the sides. Jos Buttler scored 82 to help the Royals put a score of 158 runs on the board. He was supported by Sanju Samson and Ben Stokes to a small extent. Yet again, KL Rahul was the lone warrior in the chase. He remained not out on 95 but didn’t have any sort of support from the other batsmen. Only one batsman other than KL reached the double figure mark and KXIP fell short by 15 runs in the game. 5. Andre Tye | 4-0-41-4 vs KKR Kings XI Punjab’s Andrew Tye celebrates fall of a wicket. (Photo by IANS) Andrew Tye has picked 12 of his 24 wickets in just 3 games this season. However, all his best bowling figures came on the losing cause which would be quite a disappointment for him. This time, he registered these figures against the Kolkata Knight Riders at Indore. The game was a high-scoring one. KKR batsmen made merry of the short boundaries at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. Narine provided them with the ideal start scoring 75 runs and Russell and DK later played some short, aggressive cameos to take the total to 245. Yet again, it was the story of KL Rahul and Andrew Tye. Rahul scored 66 off just 29 and this is the kind of start you would want while chasing big totals. However, the rest of the batsmen couldn’t get going and KXIP lost the game by 31 runs.
