The Kolkata Knight Riders registered their second win of the season after beating the Delhi Daredevils in the match 13 of the IPL 2018. Coming in to the game, it was a nostalgic affair for the fans at the Eden Gardens. They saw Gautam Gambhir in the opposition camp on the day. Gambhir had played all his recent editions of the IPL for the KKR outfit.
It was certainly a little different for Gambhir too, however, the homecoming was not very great for him. His side ended up bundling up for just 129 on the day. This meant that they had severely imploded in their run chase of 200 on the day. At one stage in the game, they looked like in firm command of the chase. Rishabh Pant and Glenn Maxwell scored quick 40s to keep them in the hunt.
But once the two batsmen were dismissed, the innings slumped from 86/3 to 129/10. Kuldeep Yadav was the man who accounted for both the dismissals. Earlier in the game, the Kolkata Knight Riders looked like settling down for an average score. But a blitzkrieg 41 off 12 balls from Andre Russell and a fine fifty from Nitish Rana propelled them to 200/9 in 20 overs. The end result of the game was KKR won by 71 runs.
Here are the player ratings for the match:
Chris Lynn – 4/10
Chris Lynn looked a little out of touch on the day. He played a rather uncharacteristic knock with the bat. Lynn scored 31 off 29 deliveries with four boundaries and a six. The fans did not see him cut loose on the day and would want to his some striking in the games to follow.
Sunil Narine – 7/10
Sunil Narine was back as the Kolkata Knight Riders opener in the game. However, he could only score 1 in the match. Later, with the ball, he proved to be the pick of the bowlers for his side. Narine scalped 3/18 in his three overs. He ran through the lower middle order in quick succession.
Robin Uthappa – 5/10
Veteran batsman Robin Uthappa had a decent time with the bat. Uthappa scored some quick runs in the powerplay. He scored 35 off 19 deliveries with a couple of fours and 3 sixes to his name. The team would like him to stay at the crease for a little longer now.
Nitish Rana – 9/10
Nitish Rana has some serious talent for sure. The youngster played a very well compiled knock of 59 in the match. His knock came off just 35 deliveries and was studded with five fours and four maximums. He held the innings together and anchored the innings for the hosts.
Dinesh Karthik – 3/10
Dinesh Karthik got off to a decent start with the bat. During his 10-ball stay at the crease, he hit two fours and a six to finish with 19 runs to his name. He failed to get going and perished in his attempt to up the ante in the later stages of the innings.
Andre Russell – 9.5/10
Andre Russell is a total beast. The big Jamaican hammered 41 runs in just 12 balls to propel the KKR total in the vicinity of the 200-mark. He hit six sixes during his short stay at the crease and took special liking to Mohammed Shami on the day. All his sixes came against Shami. With the ball, he returned with figures of 1/25 in two overs and accounted for the dismissal of Shreyas Iyer.
Shubman Gill – 1/10
Young Indian cricketer, Shubman Gill, got yet another opportunity to play the role of the finisher for his side. He failed to do so and could only score 6 in the game. He certainly needs to up his game a level more to match the standards of the big boys.
Shivam Mavi – 7/10
Young Shivam Mavi impressed everyone with his fiery pace. He clocked speeds in the vicinity of 145 kmph in the match. He got only two overs to bowl and returned with figures of 1/14. He got the big wicket of Gautam Gambhir in the match.
Tom Curran – 3/10
Tom Curran’s expensive run in the IPL continued. The Kolkata Knight Riders pacer went for 21 runs in the two overs that he bowled. Rishabh Pant targeted him in the innings. He got the wicket of Rahul Tewatia, which certainly improved the look of his overall figures in the match.
Piyush Chawla – 6/10
Veteran leggie Piyush Chawla turned the game on its head in the very first over of the run chase. If Delhi had a chance at chasing 200, they needed Jason Roy to play big. But Chawla had other plans. He threw a wide one to Roy, who tried to chase it and ended up getting stumped. Chawla returned with figures of 1/16 in two overs.
Kuldeep Yadav – 8/10
Kuldeep Yadav will certainly consider the day to be a lucky day for him. The chinaman got the two big wickets in the game – Maxwell and Pant – with two short deliveries. Both balls were there to be hit, but the batsmen ended up holing out in the deep. Kuldeep also dismissed the last wicket, Trent Boult, to cap off the game with 3/32 to his name.
