The Delhi Daredevils under the new captain Shreyas Iyer looked a completely different team the other evening at Firoz Shah Kotla as they bulldozed the Kolkata Knight Riders and secured their second win in the tournament to keep their playoffs hopes alive.

However, they can’t rest on their laurels as they need a winning spree here. Having lost 5 games already, they can’t afford too many more losses and as they travel to Pune to take on the table leaders CSK, they will aim to replicate a somewhat similar performance they put on against KKR.

The CSK had a blip last night against the reigning champions Mumbai Indians as they suffered an 8-wicket loss. They were below par with both bat and ball and always seemed to be catching up with the opposition rather than being ahead of the game. But it can happen in a long tournament and they won’t be massively shaken by that, considering they are still in a great position to make it to the playoffs.

Pitch and Conditions

The Pune pitch for the previous game had nice carry and the bowlers who were able to hit the hard lengths didn’t prove to be easy to put away. If it’s a bouncy surface again, it will suit Delhi as they have got some tall and strong fast bowlers who can whack the deck and can extract a fair bit of bounce to create troubles for the CSK batsmen.

CSK, on the other hand, will prefer a slightly sluggish deck as they don’t have genuine pace in the attack and they bank more on their spinners and variations from the medium pacers.

Playing Combination

Chennai Super Kings

Probable Changes – Sam Billings, Deepak Chahar and Imran Tahir out,  David Willey, Lungi Ngidi and Karn Sharma in

Deepak Chahar hurt his hamstring while bowling against the Mumbai Indians and he has been ruled out of action for the next couple of weeks. So CSK needs another bowler who can swing the ball upfront and there is no better option in the squad than David Willey as he will not only perform Chahar’s role with the ball, but will offer an aggressive option with the bat as well at the top of the order. If Willey plays and opens with Shane Watson, Ambati Rayudu will bat at no. 4.

CSK’s lack of death bowling resources was exposed in the Mumbai game as they didn’t have anyone other than Dwayne Bravo to tighten the snooze when the game got close towards the end. They might contemplate picking Lungi Ngidi who, apart from bowling with the new ball, can bowl in the death too.

Imran Tahir’s form has been indifferent this IPL. While he has bowled well in patches, he hasn’t actually taken as many wickets in the middle overs as MS Dhoni would be expecting. If the 3rd and the 4th overseas slot go to Willey and Ngidi respectively, Tahir and Sam Billings will have to miss out and Tahir’s like-for-like replacement will be Karn Sharma who is the backup leggie for CSK.

Predicted XI: David Willey, Shane Watson, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni (C & WK), Dwayne Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja, Karn Sharma, Harbhajan Sharma, Shardul Thakur, Lungi Ngidi

Delhi Daredevils

Probable Changes – No Change

Delhi dropped Dan Christian last game and picked Colin Munro to pair him with Prithvi Shaw up top and the move worked as the duo gave them the kind of brisk start they wanted. The fact that Munro and Shaw opened meant there was no room for Gautam Gambhir in the XI as he had to make way for the all-rounder Vijay Shankar. Although Shankar didn’t do anything extraordinary with either bat or ball in the game, he should still retain his spot in the XI as Gambhir can’t come in unless there is a vacancy at the opening slot.

Avesh Khan and Liam Plunkett have justified their selections in the last two games as they have provided crucial breakthroughs to the team and are absolute certainties in the XI tomorrow barring any fitness issues.

Predicted XI: Prithvi Shaw, Colin Munro, Shreyas Iyer (C), Rishabh Pant (WK), Glenn Maxwell, Vijay Shankar, Rahul Tewatia, Liam Plunkett, Amit Mishra, Trent Boult, Avesh Khan

Team Comparison

CSK’s batting is probably the most dangerous in the tournament in terms of ability, experience and recent form. But their bowling doesn’t quite have the same sting and is specifically vulnerable to the death which is the reason why their best chances lie in chasing the scores rather than defending them.

Delhi with the recent changes they have made is looking really balanced in both facets of the game, but they will want more contribution from their spinners as that’s an area where CSK might look to target them.

While Rahul Tewatia and Amit Mishra are quality leggies, they haven’t come to the party yet for Delhi and rather than giving the skipper the control, they have released the pressure with some loose stuff which they will want to rectify this game.
