While Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are preparing themselves for a grand return in the Indian Premier League (IPL), an unwanted controversy already seems to be hitting them. All the fans are awaiting their return to Chepauk Stadium with even practice matches garnering over 15000 fans in the ground. CSK will play their opening encounter of the season at Wankhede Stadium against Mumbai Indians on April 7. However, some of the political groups in Chennai are demanding ban for IPL matches in Chennai.
There is a lot of controversy going on regarding Cauvery Management Board (CMB) in the state which has not yet set up despite the order from Supreme Court which had given them a six-week deadline. All the other parties in the Chennai are protesting against the Centre and also a State bandh has been called on Thursday (April 5) for the same reason.
Protest in Stadiums as well
The leader of Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK) party, Panruti T Velmurugan, warned that the people will buy tickets of IPL matches and protest in a democratic way if BCCI conducts the IPL matches.
In order to condemn the Centre which shows no regard for the livelihood and the identity of the Tamils, we request that the IPL should not take place here – at a time when Tamilians are bursting with anger. If the BCCI conducts the IPL here, and the Tamil Nadu government and the Tamil Nadu police support it, then all those who eat the food produced by farmers will buy tickets and go inside the stadium and protest in a democratic way,” he was quoted as saying by The News Minute.
“Tamil Nadu government, BCCI and the IPL management should not push us to that level. If all our notifications on this matter are ignored, we are ready to come to the streets (to protest),” the party leader continued. All the political parties came together and demanded for a ban in a press meet on Wednesday.
