IPL 2018: Tension mounts as protests intensify in Chennai

Due to the ongoing Cauvery Water issues, there are some severe protests in Chennai to move the games away from the city. There have been various threats and protests not to conduct the games in Chennai due to the water issues. It might well be a possibility for the above to happen as the protests intensify in the city. The protests have gone up to the level that the Union Home Secretary had to intervene.

Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Rajeev Shukla met Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba and requested him to ensure additional security in and around the MA Chidambaram stadium. If in case the matches are moved out of Chennai, it will be a huge blow to the Chennai Super Kings who are making a comeback after two long years. Furthermore, the Chepauk has been a fortress for the team and they’ll want to play over there.

Foolproof security in Chennai amidst the protests

A Home Ministry official also confirmed the news about Shukla meeting the secretary. “The IPL chairman met the Union home secretary. He urged him to do the needful for additional security in the MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai. Following this, the home secretary spoke to the Director General of the Tamil Nadu Police. And, he asked him to ensure proper security during the match,” he said.

The home secretary also assured the IPL chairman that foolproof security will be provided for all the matches in Chennai, another official said. Hours before the CSK and KKR tie, some pro-Tamil activists tried to stage a demonstration outside the MA Chidambaram Stadium. They held protests about the IPL fixtures amid the raging Cauvery protests.

The Chennai Super Kings play their first game in Chepauk after over a 1000 days. It will be really interesting to see how the proceeding goes on amidst all the chaos.
