The 23-year-old Harpreet Brar has finally got an Indian Premier League (IPL) contract after seven years of trials for them. The tall all-rounder will play for Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in the upcoming season of world’s biggest T20 league owing to his seven-year-long slog in the domestic circuit.

His father, Punjab Police driver Mohinder Singh, was in tears when the franchise bought his son for Rs 20 lakhs. After a lot of struggle playing for Punjab Under-16 where the junior selectors ignored him, he finally got his first Under-23 season which also will be his last.

Mohinder Singh, Harpreet’s father, who served in Indian Army for 26 years, while speaking for Times of India, said, “We were following the auction live on television when Harpreet was playing for Punjab Under-23 in Jaipur against Rajasthan. We celebrated all night but the real party will be when he comes home on Thursday.”

Harpreet used to play for Ropar in Katoch Shield (Punjab inter-district cricket tournament) and took 40 odd wickets on regular basis and this was his fourth trial for Kings XI Punjab. The left-hander decided to move to Canada to his sister’s house if he fails to win the IPL contract this year but it seems like this is not happening anytime sooner now. The hard work has finally paid off and he is ready to mark his new journey.

I will move to my sister in Canada for good

“I had decided that if I fail to break into the Punjab senior team or get an IPL contract this year, I will move to my sister in Canada for good. But destiny had at least some luck in store for me. I am a positive person and it was a difficult journey for me and my family ” said the youngster from Zirakpur.

“Junior cricket is not a guaranteed path to becoming an established cricketer. In a country like India, the path is even tougher because you are competing with hundreds of talented boys. Many players go through challenges but winners make it in the end,” he added.
